Question MEP004A Generator Noise Question

Aloha,
How much noise in db, does the MEP004A military generator make? It is a 15kw diesel powered and looks like it is in a soundproof enclosure. Does this set really weigh 3000lbs? I will try to post a picture.

Mahalo,

Probably has everything you want to know including noise level in decibels from X feet away. Noise is one reason the military is replacing these with MEP-804A's, The TQ or "Tactical quiet" series.

Aloha Jim,
Thanks for the link and I found the weight but I couldn't find anything about the noise. I looked through the file 3 times and still couldn't find it but there were some places that I couldn't read because it was too blurry.

As Jim stated, noise was one of the reasons for discontinuing the MEP-00X series gensets. The unit you have pictured is definitely not a soundproof enclosure. Don't have the weight handy for a MEP-004, but a MEP-005 (it's 30kW brother) wieghed 2850 dry. Uploaded a picture of what the acoustic package for these looked like. Sound packages were never available to anyone but Army personnel that I'm aware of. The acoustic package was rated at 70dB at 7 meters on the MEP-005. MEP-004's ran a White (hercules) D-198, the MEP-005's ran a D-298.

Glad you asked. I grabbed the sound meter and went out to check mine. Found the genset batteries dead. So, in a day or so, after they get charged up, I'll let you know, but I'm guessing it'll be about 20 dB higher than the 70 dB of the acoustic treated variant.

Jim M, I'll bet you're pretty close on there. When I was in the service, we had enviromental health folks come by every year and do dB checks on our equipment. I can't remember the specifics anymore, but something at 85 or greater rings a bell. Great old units...still like'em, wish I had one

My MEP-004 is in an outbuilding. Inside, about 12 feet from the set it measures 92 dB(A) / 102 dB(C).

Outside at 50 feet from the building it was 60 dB(A) / 76 dB(C).

These measurements were with no load on the set - I suppose it might be a tad louder when fully loaded.
