This question is related to the collecting hobby only by the fact that the truck will be used to "Hawl" my stuff to and from the shows. Ford "Cornbinder"diesel vs Dodges Cummins. Your thoughts are welcome before I commit a hundred engines worth of dough to their transportation. Chevy answers not welcome.

Look at who has made 90% of the motorhome chassis for the last twenty years for your answer. Dodge may have a better motor (I said may, not definately!) but Ford has always made a better truck.

Hi - Just do what I did and get a good used class 8 truck!- I got a 1959 peterbilt for $1900 and its about 400 times more truck than any of them and you can get a CAT engine if you like!- Its a little more to operate but you can take ALL your old iron to the show!

I agree with both Gus and Scott, no Chevy answers and Ford makes the better truck (and engine.) I've heard my fair share of Ford's out pulling Dodge's. Not to make anybody mad here, Ford, Dodge, and Chevy all make good trucks it is just my opinion that the Ford's do the best. Of course we will find out how our Ford does tomorrow when we pick up my new (well not new) prized chunk of iron tommorow!!!

Hell I forgot, if you want Power get a steam tractor. Guaranteed to outpull the biggest Ford, Dodge or Chevy.

The Ford has a little more towing power than the Dodge. I have used them both. But if you really want to be narrow minded forget about the new GM diesel with the Allison transmission. It out pulls both of them. Maybe you could try a Toyota. Go test drive, Tony

Don't get all bent out of shape over pick up preferences. It's just not important.

Now, as to engines, nobody ever made them better than Fairbanks Morse!!

I don't think there is hardly any difference and I buy trucks as part of my job. I just got back from a 2000 mile loop to NY, Mass, & Conn in a Dodge 1 ton flatbed with the 6 cyl Cummins and auto trans. I was very impressed with it. Good luck in your decision. Mike

I WORK AS A MECHANIC AT A FORD AND DODGE DEALER.BEING THERE FOR 11 YEARS I HAVE A OPINION OF WHICH I WOULD BUY. DODGE A LITTLE LESS PULLING POWER BUT MORE FUEL ECONOMY AND ENGINE LIFE.POWERSTROKERS ARE A LITTLE MORE SPENDY ON MAINTAINANCE(INJECTOR SEAL SENSOR PROBLEMS) BUT ITS STILL PERSONAL PREFERENCE. IF YOU WANT TO PULL A BIG LOAD USE A STEAM ENGINE(YOU JUST GOT TO GET UP A LOT EARLIER IN THE MORNING. I ALSO THINK FAIRBANKS MORSE IS A PRETTY DARN GOOD ENGINE.

sort of like rep: and dem: each to his own, i have 40 years driving a ford truck with no problems, best thing to do is drive them all and look at your pocket book, been there and done that on a million miles with a ford so will stay with what works for me.

Do what I did. Drive them both and pick the one that is most comfortable for you to drive. I hate a back ache. My Cummins has been problem free for 100,000 miles, knock on wood.

G'Day, thought I'd stick in my 2 cents worth too. I hav'nt got a Dodge, Ford or Chevy pickup, ute, call it what you will. I've got a good old Aussie Holden sedan by GMH, it's powered by a big 202 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine on LPG. It will tow the tandem trailer at 100 kph (60mph) with 2 ton of engines in it in 5th gear, fuel economy is about 24 mpg. It's also the family car, my daughters call it dads brown bomb. A 300 CI engine. that sucker can pull my 6 HP Fairbanks Moris, 31/2 HP united,A delco Plant A maytag Wringer washer A mother Maytag, A brigs and Stratton and a Wheel horse lawn tractor! with plenty of power to get up the hills in PA. That is my 2 Canadian cents worth. that's about 1 1/4 cents American!!!. Thanks Corey

After reading all the above, I just have to let you all know my preference is "CHEVY". My 1994 extended cab long bed 1500 will turn 200,000 engine miles tomorrow. Other than normal maintenance, "NO PROBLEM HERE". Don't like Chrysler products in general and the Dodge diesel is to noisy for me. Ford might be "OK" since they have an IHC engine in them. Thinking of a new Chevrolet 2500 HD/diesel(but, I hear they have cooling problems). I would have to sell off most of my engine collection anyway to help pay for it, and be left with only IHC engines. Maybe next year? , what should one do???? I wonder what my favorite engine is(hint: not Fairbanks)?

I have been reading this thread with some amusement. Bottom line is, drive what you can afford. I love old iron, but my first priority is my family, what I play with and what I drive comes second. I have a 96 Ranger with a 2.3, and as most of you know that severly limits what I can take to a show. It's a great running truck, but no pulling power. I work many long and hard hours, and I put a lot of time in my motors, but there is always that one person who has to come and and knock what I have because it's not as big and fancy as his. For them, I say good for you, you have been fortunate and can go out and buy your hearts desire. Some of us can not do that. I do not envy those kind of people, I have worked for what I have, and it is mine. Until you have walked in another man's shoes, and have to pay his bills, one should not be judgemental. I am glad I am able to finally get into this hobby, it has taken a very long time. You may fly past me on a hill going to a show, but I will get there. See ya, David.
