thanx for the responses guys. so i take it there aren't to many guys that build scale (under 1/4) traction engines. those are very good links with A LOT of info. i already found out a lot of GOOD info and haven't even posted any questions yet. for example: did you know that you can "roll" in 3/8" and 5/8" tubes with a tapered dowel? great stuff guys!

i tried to get this going for the working models of engines. No luck seems only a few people do it. It would be nice.

i think there are a lot of model builders just most of them are busy building models!
which is good for them and bad for someone (like myself) who would like to try. havvey, have you ever attended the North American Model Engineering Society show before? it is usually held near detroit but this year it is going to be held in my town!!! it is april 22nd and 23rd at the Seagate convention center in toledo, ohio. i know it is a cruise from maine but im sure you wouldnt be dissappointed. i'll send some pics to craig to post.

Might I suggest a subscription to Live Steam magazine? They always have articles about building steam powered engines. I admit their focus is mainly on little locomotives, but before my subscription ran out
(spent all my money on gas towing to shows this year ) they did have articles on small traction engines in the scale you mentioned. Also some of the articles on locomotive const were very helpful for someone like me who has more of a background in operating than construction. Now if I could only figure out how to start that drill press......

i had a subscription to live steam for a year and there was so little info on traction engines that i haven't bought a copy since the script. ran out. this was a while ago and maybe things hve changed. maybe i'll go up the road to the hobby shop and pick up a copy. i hear ya on the gas prices.

boogie another problem with models i see (actually two) the price and most don't have a machine shop in the basement. mechenics kits are scarce and costly. If that was overcome you would see a big difference. like the model rockets are fairly cheap but moel airplanes are not!
