Hi Guys,
I was just given a Universal Motor that had been pulled out of a sailboat a couple of years ago. I was told that the engine dated back to the late thirties or the earlly forties which sounds right. I think that they startted calling them atomic fours in the fifties. Anyway, the engine seems to be in good shape and pretty much compleat with the transmission and reduction gear. The name plate says " Universal Fuel Oil Motor, Type Fuel - Oil, Series BN-R, Serial No 33649" . Any information on it's age would be appreciated |

Thanks for the tip. Looks like it's a Universal Utility Four of around 1940 - 1950. One other question though. The engine had a one gallon fuel tank mounted in front. I was told that some of these engines were duel fuel. Was the small gas tank for gas and then after it wormed up it would go on kerosine? The top of the exhaust manifold is open with a copper tube heat exchanger laid in it. I had assumed that the cooling water went through it after it left the head, but was it used to heat the fuel before it went to the fuel pump. sounds dangerous? It looks like everything is there but nothing was hooked up when I was given this. Any info would be appreciated.

We have a Universal GenSet, used in a nearby Silver Mine to charge ore cart batteries..Great runner.
Re: the dual fuel..are there two needle valves on the carb? or at least a selector valve. The above link to the company has a pix of ours and would probably like a picture of yours. Happy Holidays RickinMt. |

Thanks for the info. All the fuel lines were disconected when I recieved it. My guess is that if it was duel fuel to begin with, it wasn't being used that way at the end. I'm not very good at computers, but I didn't see your link to the picture you were talking about.

Click on this link. Our engine is at the bottom. The link at the bottom doesn't work anymore and will try and change that.

Here's our Universal and some literature. Apologize for some of the illegible wordin' as it was gleaned off of ebay. We do have more and hope to post it as soon as I get a new scanner.
