Default can inner tubes be used as gaskets?

I was thinking of different gasket materials to use on my Fairbanks Morse water pump. The gasket material that is on there now is needing replaced, and is a rubber with cloth inside. I will need to use it on the pump side as well as for the enclosed oil resevoir / crankshaft area.

Any tube that I have seen --always--shrinks up--drys out and cracks--not a very good material for gaskets in my opinion--

I Don't Know The Answer To Your ????but I Wondered If Some Of This Rubber Roofing Would Work. It Has Cloth Backing, And Some Is Fairly Thick. Dick In Central Pa.

Dick,

I asked George what he thought about using the reinforced rubber roofing for the pump gasket and he replied that he never thought of it but it just might work OK....Helen

Hey Dick, I was just curious as to what kinda rubber roofing material has cloth on it? I worked for a roofing company for 7 years here in MN and never seen any rubber materials with cloth on it. The stuff we use here is darn near the same stuff as an inner tube. When laid out on the roof the rubber shrinks after its been laid out.It is durable once the rock is laid down but I don't think it would work well with moving parts. Dan Sheldon. P.S. GO VIKINGS.

On the water side, it MAY work, on the oil side, IT WON'T. Oil will cause the rubber to swell and creep out of the joints. Try the cork type gasket material Lee Pederson sells (sponser here on the Stak). It is oil resistant, and will compress to seal imperfections in castings.

I've had success cutting gaskets out of the Heavy manilla file folders.

Try your local auto supply or hardware store for neoprene gasket material. It comes in various thicknesses and is oil and gas proof.

What you originally had is called Diaphram sheet, it comes in different thickness. It is also used in natural gas regulators, feeding businesses and homes, automotive fuel pumps, etc. If you have a rubber supply house near, check with them. Ask for Neoprene diaphram sheet, in the thickness you have, hope this helps. Haven't looked, but Lee Peterson, may also offer it.

I had a friend help me with restoring 5 different Delco-Light plants. With the exception of head gaskets, he used Bush-lite cartons for all the gaskets. They worked great (and less filling) and we usually had an empty carton every time we worked on them. We used Lite beer cartons cause we were working on light plants. Oh! Sorry, I guess you were working on water pumps.

I have found that using plain cardboard (beer cartons, cereal boxes, etc) is not a good choice. Oil will eventually soak it and seep out. Best to spend a couple of bucks and get genuine gasket material from an auto parts store. After replacing the beer carton gasket from the bottom cover on a little Lauson mower engine that left a puddle on the floor with real gasket I have not had a drop leak from it. On things like carb to manifold, cardboard is OK, but if there is oil behind it, it will eventually come through.

Welllllllllllll...... ............maybe using the cardboard which will wick oil out might bring a hint of something akin to a real working unit to the fore?? Just trying to lamely justify my cheap gasket material.

That's what is called in the trade "Insertion Rubber", we use it 1/8" thick for our workbench tops at the factory.

Comes in cotton cloth or nylon inside, but it's only any use where the squeezing force wouldn't be enough to make it creep out sideways. Big water and sludge-pump gaskets and things like that are what it is also used for.

Mark: I have used a gasket made of rubber that is used on transformers and pumps. It I think it is called velcon? You can find it at your industrial supply houses. You can get it in 1/8 to 1/2" thickness. It works well with water or oils warm or cold weather.

Considering all the remarks, I, also made one, above, now I'll have to make another. I bought a twin Maytag, and upon disassembling the top and bottom of the gas tank. the gasket was made from an old cereal box. I could still read the writting on part of it. Guess someone used what they had to get by, and by golly, guess it filled the bill and worked. They call that southern ingenuity. If I spelled Ingenuity right. But, I don't think the southerners were the only ones to use what they had.
