I understand what maytags should be what colour but my question is how do you get a black wrinkle finish on the twin cylinder? Is it a painting method that gets the "wrinkle" look to it? Dan Sheldon

If you are familiar with "Kennedy" tool boxes, they sell spray cans of wrinkle finish paint to match their boxes in red, brown & black. You have to apply 2 coats with the second going on while the first is still tacky. Something about the shrinkage as it cures gives it the wrinkle effect.

Car Quest in Northwood, Iowa has it in stock in spray cans. It is a challenge to get just the right amount of paint on. It takes 3 heavy coats 15 minutes apart. It also takes a long time for all that paint to cure.

The Maytag service manual explains how to reproduce the black finish.
Note that not all twins had that color. The first year of production had the same green color as the single cylinders. |

Some Maytag twins also had a smooth finish as well. Contact Simpson Motors (formerly Maytag Unlimited), and talk to Larry. He has production dates by S/N, and can tell you proper color per year. He has the paint too!
419-369-4665 9-4, 7-10, mon-sat no sunday calls. He has parts from the uprights thru the twins. Check the sponsors page as well, here on the Stak! Andrew

Thanks Andrew but I can see that it was wrinkle finish. I bought 2 cans today for 6.47 at Auto Value. I was surprised that they had it. Thank you everyone. Dan S

Thanks to everyone. The wrinkle paint is working out well.Actually it looks just like it did from way back then. Its not the easiest to paint with though. I paint the parts in my dark and dingy basement then bring them up and place on my radiators in the house. thanks Dan Sheldon

Don't light a match!
Larry has all 4 paints for the Maytag horizontal engines - the 2 greens (the 82s used a different shade than the 92s and the early twins), the black gloss, and the wrinkle finish. I think he has the blue and red used on the early uprights as well. Let us see the finished project when done!Andrew

Tom G., do you remember what serial number the engine was you saw this on? That would be an interesting and good looking combination. Here is what I have come to understand. The 1937 engines were all green like the 92's. Around early 1938 between #s 838901-856624 the engines were painted green and wrinkle black. It was the starter which was painted black including the pedal, segment gear, starter cover, and ratchet assembly. Toward the end of 1938 they started painting them all wrinkle finish black. This continued until they quit regular production for WWII. After regular production resumed in 1945 the engines soon left with gloss black paint and the heavier Eisemann 7DA Magnetos and some with the Wico mags. I have never seen or heard of a twin Maytag with original green crank case and black cylinders, but I learn something new evey day. |
