No to the engine idea, but it would definitely spark your plug if used for the original purpose intended.

Does anyone have a flash attachment or even a desk lamp available when they take eBay photos or are they all taken in the darkest corner of the house at midnight?

That looks like an old radio transmitter with a tuning coil. Most likely a quack medical device. (Bring money, just like today - bring more money. Only today, medical offices are run like mills, grinding greenery out of wallets. I was looking for the line shaft and then someone in line did get the shaft. What? You don't have insurance? You'll have to pay now or leave. )

if you search ebay there is another for sale almost like it, except it has the cables that the other one is missing,

if you google it, it brings up stuff about quack medicine, would be interesting to know how it was used and for what
