Since the small engine board has been kinda slow and with the recent serial number interest, I thought I'd start something. I have a 1936 Model Y, and I know they are pretty common. Was just wondering if maybe anyone has a serial number close to mine. For some reason the idea intrigues me... Anyway mine is 254661.

Funny you should bring this up - Of the 5 Model Y's that I have - 4 are from '36 and always thought that was a strange coincidence. Must have been a good year. I'll write down the S/N's from the tags when I go to the shop and list them here. With as many Y's as there are out there, I'm sure there are bound to be some close numbers.

OK - I wrote down the S/N's for the Briggs Model Y's that I have (that have an ID tag) and they are as follows:
Serial # Date of Manufacture 233157 Jan. 1936 (Montgomery Ward tag) 269389 May 1936 281911 July 1936 283744 July 1936 |

Ah ha, found a picture of mine. When I got it, it was "face down" in a mud hole at the junk yard. Someone has cut the kick start off with a torch, so I made the rope start. Since it didn't have a tank, and I didn't have any extras, I made the mason jar work. Works great, even with no check valve!

Mine has a serial number of 100984, putting it as being built in late 1934. It would be pretty cool to find two consecutive serial numbered motors! Anybody have, or have seen any?

Well guys , My ser. #story .is this , I had 2 homelite E Z 6 chainsaws that were 4 digets apart . I got 1 that had a broken crank shaft all else excellant cond. so set it aside . Later found another with a scored cyl .Set it beside the other , future project. then later got another good looking saw . set there also , hopeing they would fix them self's . So a couple years ago their time come up . so I mixed the bad crank & the bad cyl. together & made a good saw. So then was looking at the model tags " WHAT " look at this ! 4 digets apart . these saws were built in 1958 & came back together in 2000 .I still have the 1 & the other I put it in a museum .thanks for hearing me out. Sean,
Thats what I was hoping for when I started this thread. As many Ys as there are still left... there will surely be something show up. It may take awhile, but I hope as the thread grows in replys it will draw more attention. |

Over the years I have kept the most original/lowest sn Y I found. Serial no 30729, 8/33, resides in my collection now. It has an amazing tag with all the original black background paint still there. I bought it in 2000 from a collector auction.
I see by my records that I sold a shroud w/tag # 12142 on ebay around that time. From the same auction. Best auction I have ever been to, no Briggs collectors there. Bought a couple of boxes of FH parts for fifteen bucks. There was a brass carb, light plant base,2 slant blocks,2heads, coils. It has all been sold. Bought 14 small motors for less than ten bucks each. I got bored today and did some figuring. You guys have given the numbers of 15 engines (or parts of), ranging from August of 1933 to August of 1936. I found two more on ebay, one whole engine and one tag, the engine being 77381 and the tag is 1206?? (six digits). The closest so far are 281911 and 283744, both being Mr. Newman's, with the difference of 1833. Keep em comin!

I came across another '36 Y tag in my files. This one from June #273171.
Picture shows the restoration attempt I did on it. Didn't turn out too bad.... |

That tag looks real good John. I just started to restore some maytags they look pretty darn good to but I'm still waiting for the older style decals to come in the mail. I restored a 1933 92 and a 1938 wrinkle finish 72 and I'm currently doing my 82 after that my 1/2hp upright. I'm lucky that I have 4 different types but still wish I had the fruit jar engine. I have other Briggs Y's they are #'s 92585 and 250902. I have one more Y in the shed I need to get #'s off of. Dan Sheldon

John, that tag looks great! You got any tips on making them look so good? I hope everyone keeps the pics coming, it gives inspiration (sp) to keep working on our on projects!

I have been able to restore several old Briggs tags, but one important point is that the tag has to be in fairly good shape to begin with. If the lettering is all worn down you will have a tougher time with it, but most can still be made to look better than "As-Found" with a little work. Thoroughly clean and polish the tag then spray paint it black. After the paint is about dry, I scrape off the raised areas with an aluminum scraper (it's softer than the brass so you don't cut or scratch it) You can make one from a soda can, a scrap of aluminum siding , or something similar. This may leave a little paint on some of the raised places. That's OK - leave it. Let it completely dry and carefully go for the remaining places with a small corner of Scotch-Brite. Some have come out good in one shot, others had to be redone a few times to get it right. After you have it where you want it, give it a shot of clear coat. This will bring back the gloss to any paint you might have dulled with the Scotch-Brite and protect the exposed brass from tarnishing.
When you do one (or several) put some pictures here and show us. A good looking tag is a great finishing touch on any engine. |
