Does anyone build and sell model sized hit and miss engines for a reasonable price? I found 1 guy who would build a john deere 1/4 scale hit and miss for $310 running and shipped but it will be a while before he makes any more of the engines.
Thanks, Grant |

Are you sure the decimal is in the right place? The un-machined kit is twice that ammount!

Grant; I agree with an earlier post; I think you have the decimal point in the wrong place! I am a participant in the annual NAMES (North American Model Engineering Society) show in Michigan, now to be in Ohio, and there are model engines and kits for sale there. You would be lucky to find a kit at $300.00! For a completed model, move the decimal point one place to the right! My brother-in-law told some of the vendors at NAMES, that he buys full size engines because he cannot afford the models! That says it all! Karl

These are not true replicas of the JD but they are hit and miss working models.
here is a copy of the email he sent me before he sold the engine. Email or call him. I think i might have pissed him off in a email. Let me know what he says. He might build you one. Do you want to sell any of your full sized engines? If so how much? Where are you located? Thanks, Grant heres the email: I am attaching a picture of 2 fabricated 'John Deere' engines. 3 1/2" flywheels, 3/4" bore, 1" stroke. These are also shown on page 2 of my web site http://peimodelengineworks.homestead.com I put lots of brass on them. They will run on either Coleman fuelh or alcohol. An ignition coil and 6 or 12 volt battery is required. Ignition coils are also shown on the web page. The engine comes with instructions, adjustments and lubrication recommendations. I can supply from stock, Packaging, insurance and shipping are additional to the engine. Price of the engine is US$250.00. Ignition coils are US$50.00 + 10.00 for packing, shipping and insurance. Hey Guy's
I'm not trying to be rude, but Harry has a forum section on SmokStak for the discussion of Models. If you go to the model forum section I will give you the details about this suppliers model kits that you have been talking about. Regards John Davis |

I had real good luck with Bob Herder Models. He has a web-site, but it is easy to call and sometimes a lot faster. 968-832-4184 Best Regards Capt,n

I find it strange that there isn't any prices listed on that website. I have yet to see anyone willing to build model engines for anyone for under $1000 plus cost of castings and shipping costs. If they are done right a 1/4 scale, detailed, reliable running engine will take a couple dozen hours to build which means the guy would be making about 3-5.00 an hour (if he's good and doesn't make a lot of scrap along the way). Would you work for this pay? Some people charge $20 an hour for machining time s
o if it took 100 hours your looking at $2,000.00 to do the job. There was a Mery Explosive engine in the consignment sale at NAMES this year that wasn't completely finished and was marked $7,500.00. This myth is "BUSTED" (Sorry, I'm a Myth Busters junky and couldn't resist.).Forrest A |

The fun part is building the engine. Buy the castings and start working on it. A little at a time and sooner or later you will get it done. I would not want to buy a Model Hitt & Miss engine in running ..ready to go. The real good feeling that you have is when it runs...and you did it, and you will know every part and what it does. best Regards Capt,n
