Question Far East Old marine engines

when i was much younger and in the military i remember seeing small boats in the harbor that were chugging around with what must have been 1 cyl diesel or kerosene burning engines each puff of exhaust would send up a black cloud, some even made smoke rings.Does anyone here know anything about those engines, any sort of information would be apreciated. TIA Don

A lot of Chinese diesels that were copied on the Deutz horizontal engines are fitted to smaller boats, plus there were quite a few European engines out there.

Japan and China have had a fair sized industry going back pre-WWII days in small engines.

I have an old deutz water cooled marine one cylinder 2 stroke oil engine. You might have seen some of them. I have read that the actual power plant in Bogarts African Queen was one of these with a mock up steamer for show. Strangely enough I bought this one from a Chihuahua Mennonite machinery trader who brought it up here to an auction. He told me an old man had used it many years to irrigate from a river. The German tag I.D. is Deutz Otto. Has a Mexican tag from Casa Otto.
