If I were to have an old tractor that I wanted to sell, what would be the biggest/best auction, say west of the Mississippi, to look at going to?

Why not offer it for sale in Harry's Barnsale ads? You have more control over what you ask and eventually get for the tractor than at an auction.

Just my opinion.

I would DEFINATELY sell it on Harry's. Selling it at YOUR desired price will guarantee that's what you get out of it, plus you dont have to worry about the auctioneers % of the total sale taken out of what you get . If you dont know what it's worth, do some research or ask some other collectors, and you should be able to get a general idea.

An auction at best is a crap shoot. You could get 10 times the items value (like on EBay) or only 10%! It all depends on the crowd that particular day when the item is sold. Crowds are fickle - I bought a slant top desk at an auction several years ago. it was at the beginning of the sale, and I paid $50 for it. 10 minutes, its twin (came from same estate) came up, and sold for 500! You just never know at an auction! Here at harry's, as stated before, you can research the price, set it, and sell it, without having to haul it all over the place.

I might add that you can include photos and all the information you want while being relatively safe from scammers (Harry watches THEM like HAWK. ) here as well....AND....the pittance that Harry asks for is FAR less than the fees and commissions than at auction..............

I support the idea of useing this site to list your tractor.. it would have an exposure like no other for the small amount Harry asks..

However, If a person has a number of items to sell and they want to dispose of them without all the hassle and would like a fair market value... a well advertised and conducted auction is the means to do it.. How better to judge what is fair than between two or more bidders at a well listed auction ?

As far as the fees charged... shop around ! some firms think they are the cats meow, and really charge for the fluff and glitter..

It boils down to your time and how well you hold up to tire kickers and scam wanabe's when you decide on how much an auctioneers fee is worth..

The old stereotypes are hard to break in a profession when they are thrown into the air at every opportunity..

Ok, I'm off my soap box Randy Hart Ohio Auctioneer

I have nothing against auctions and auctioneers, I love going to auctions, even if I don't have any money and someone has to put stuff in auctions otherwise there wouldn't be any.

Now that we've given Marty our opinion on selling on Harry's does anyone know of a good auction west of the Mississippi like Marty asked? I live in Maryland so I can't be of any help. If I were going to sell a tractor at an auction in the east I'd choose Beiler's auction in late February (23 and 24 this year). My second choice would be the Williams Grove show auction the Saturday before Labor Day.

Some of the shows or auction houses in the mid-west must have consignment auctions someone can recommend.

Just my second opinion!

Located in Vista California (near San Diego) we ARE well west of the Mississippi River, and have two auctions yearly.

Our next auction is Sunday, July 30, 2006, Starting at 10 a.m.

For more information please see:

http://www.agsem.com/Auction.htm

We also have an annual November auction. I attach a collage of 12 pics from our Nov 2005 auction, that appeared in our December 2005 membership newsmagazine, The Ignitor.
