Default Clark Bros. Engine

Hello all~ Just seeing if any one out there has any Clark Bros Engine info that they would like to share. I know there was an article in GEM on these engines, which month last year was that? Who is the Clark expert?
A friend of mine and I are going to rescue a 60 HP Clark pumping engine. This engine is 20 feet long, 6' flywheels and I would have to guess right around 10 to 12 thousand Lbs. A friend of our went the other day to locate the property owner so we could bet permission to remove the engine and literally saved it from the torch that very day. Here are a couple of photos

The end with the large bolt around the cylinder is the compressor side. I think it just transferred natural gas, pressurizing the lines. Two rods from the cross head of the engine side go back to power the cross head of the pump side. I am just guessing but the crank main journal has to be at least 6" to 8" dia. Moving the engine and getting it running will be well documented.

Keith, I'm working on trying to get you some sort of litrature on Clark engines. In a round about way Ingrasol Rand ended up with the "rights" to the Clark Engine. I have a contact there that will try looking thru their archives and hopefully find something. Please keep up posted on your progress

Thanks Doug~

Here is our current mindset, the engine is sitting on a hill side which is surrounded by trees. Luckily there is a small winding access road that was used by maintenance in years past. The engine will be lifted by jacks and moved onto a steel I-Beam skid and then bolted down. The engine will then be skidded off the hill side with a bull dozer to the road down below. There it will be lifted by track hoe, pipe layer, crane or some other machine with the capacity to lift this engine and it will be palced on a semi trailer frame and secured. Then the trek from Walhonding, Ohio to Radnor, Ohio. That is when the fun starts. I will keep you updated with the progress.
Thank you so much for inquiring about literature for this engine. I am also going to contact the gas company who owns the lease to see if they may still have any maintenance manuals.

Keith; Good luck with getting the big girl up and running. When we got our 50 hp Bessie we used a oilfield truck to pick it up ( 14000 pounds or so ), he set it on a I-beam skid we built to get it home with. We also used a low- boy to haul it home, but turned the I- beam skid into a trailer to haul our engine. Nothing six or eight months of work won't take care of, keep us posted on how it is coming. Gary

The Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association has one of these engines on display in running shape. I do not know who the owner is but if you contact them, I am sure you can find out something. (http://www.tuckahoesteam.org/)

Keith,

Take a look at GEM Sept. 2005, p.9+, I think that is the article.

My dad currently owns the engine that is located at Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association in MD. He has recently restored the engine. If you have questions about the engine I can put you in contact with him.

Thanks Tom~

That would be great. These big engines are not all that common. I have heard there are larger Clark engines, 100HP+ but are there any left? Especially this day in age, an engine like this is seen as a recycler's dream and is quickly cut up for scrap.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but yes there is at least one 100+ horsepower clark engine out there.

This ol' girl was pulled out of the huntington beach ice plant. It will eventually run. Eventually...

I know of a place that has 2 big Clark bros engines.

I was there the last time they worked on them.

The main engine was a 120 HP double cylinder engine/compressor.

The auxillary engine was a 110 hp in the same configuration.

They just quit running them about 5 years ago.

One of our members is creating a website for our Gas Engine Row:

http://gasenginerow.com/

http://gasenginerow.com/ClarkPump.html
shows the Clark engine Eric put a picture of on here, tho on this site the HP is quoted 80 @ 200 rpm.

Here is the URL for a Clark engine that we run:

http://gasenginerow.com/Clark.html

Which is quoted at 120 HP.
