Question 1967 Merc 6 horse water pump

I just got a 67 Merc 6 horse and I want to change the water pump. I have already sourced the water pump kit and the lower unit seal kit (its not here yet). My question is this, is there a metal sleeve in the middle of the rubber that is actually the pump? When I pulled the rubber out it had to be pried off of what looks like some sort of metal sleeve. Is this sleeve supposed to come out also? Any help would be appreciated. This is my first outboard to work on. michael@gulfjanitorservices.com
