Default Friend Orchard Sprayer

I would very much like see some pics or catalog images of Friend Orchard Sprayers. Are any catalog reprints out there? I just aquired a sprayer at auction, with the idea of removing the engine. Now, that I have it home; it looks origional and complete. I think I will keep it intact. I wonder if the hinged engine cover is origional. And if the paint color and wheel etc...,, are all factory origional. In the photo the cover for the engine is sitting on the top of the barrel. I could use some advise on how to protect the wood. I plan to store this outside under canvas and I was thinking about adding some kind of oil to the wood. I dont want to hurt the paint. Also, wondering what kind of poision might that white crusty powered stuff bee. This was used in a apple orchard. Old iron is adictive: I never though much about orchard sprayers, nor was I particular impressed with the Friend engines; but now I have one I like it.

Hello, I just registered on this board and was interested in your post. I am an environmental geologist and I run a 5 acre orchard. I know almost nothing of the engine, wood, or other operating equipment on this sprayer. However, the white powder I may know something about. At the time this sprayer was likely utilized the insecticide of choice was Lead Arsenate, sounds bad-is bad. Be carfull with the residue. If you wash off the powder, I would reccomend you do it at a place were the run-off can be collected and treated by a water utility (e.g. carwash). Also, wear rubber gloves when cleaning the sprayer. Good luck.

Hi Peter,

I just acquired a Friend Sprayer at a yard sale. Mine has a hinged "dog house" over the engine -- I haven't pressure washed it yet so not sure about the original colors.

Mine seems to have all the original equipment -- it even has an oilcloth cover for the WICO magneto -- I presume that htis was intended to prevent the spray from shorting out the mag.

I would be interested in any of the original manuals -- I am going to check with the original owners son to see if anything still exists in the way of manuals and documentation.

Ray

I was searching Smokstak for info on my Friend FX engine and Pump. Does your rig have a FX engine?

I would really appreciate having a diagram of the pumbing from the sprayer
tank to the pump and engine.

Mine has three connections. One on the bottom of the pump, one out the top of the pump and a third out the bottom of the engine. There is another connection from the pump to the engine through a short hose connection.

I think the inlet to the pump is the bottom pump connection. The top pump connection is to the sprayer hose and nozzle. The one out of the bottom of the pump must have recirculated the water in the engine back into the sprayer tank. I am just not sure and would like confirmation.

Thanks for any information you may be able to supply

Peter

Once you get the tank cleaned out, I would suggest a product , SMITH'S Penetrating Epoxy. It will seal the insecticide in the wood and not be a problem there after. It will not hurt the paint or decals. It is a little costly. about $100.00 For a 2 part package. Makes 2 gallons of sealer. Part A & Part B. It was designed for rotted wood. It will actually restore rotted wood. We have used this on many bad wooden wheels with great success.

If you need more info on this, PM me and I will send you all of the info I have on this product.

Jim
