Default paint and gasoline reaction

I think We screwed up,I'm restoring a Fairbank's morse Z,for a friend and He chose Plasti kote universal red # 209 engine enamal.Well after reading about paint on here i tested a small part, with gas and it came off.Dang!
If I was to use a clear coat over this that was fuel resistant will it work?
I have the motor 90% painted and it would be alot of work to redo it.any info would be great!

It might take a lot of drying time before it's ready for gas.

Exclamation Re: paint

The problem with clear coating the existing paint are: 1) compatability - will the clear coat react with the base coat. 2) you will have to wait at least 30 days before clear coating, to allow all the volatiles to exit the base coat. 3) If the clear coat ever cracks, or takes an impact, its integrity will suffer, allowing gas to get to the base coat - this will allow the gas to penetrate and lift a large area. 4) Will the clear coat change the appearance of the base coat - change over time, and or alter with the introduction of gas to its surface (discolor)? It may be time well spent to replace bad paint now while the engine is apart, rather than later, whenyou have done all that work, and then have to redo it over.

Harry:

I can go along with that! If I paint something with RustOleum, I have to give it -at least- two weeks in warm weather to dry sufficiently to be gas resistant.

Take care - Elden
