Default Auctions in Kansas

There are two auctions in Kansas the first week in May. The first on May 5th it is the Frank Estate and has a 50hp Case sn# 34566. Here is the link to that sale bill at Aumannn Auctions. http://www.aumannauctions.com/auctio...age.php?pid=60

The second sale is the Salter Estate and it has a 65hp Case sn# 335357 and a 40hp Case sn# 31697. Here is the link to that sale bill. http://www.aumannauctions.com/auctio...page.php?pid=6

I have not seen any of these. The 50hp does have a current Kansas certificate and if you look at the pictures on the internet sale bill you will find the certificate and the inspection sheet. The other two have been stored for some time.

The Frank Estate Sale on Friday, May 5th is in Copeland, Kansas. Copeland is about 35 miles West of Dodge City, Kansas on US-56. The Salter Estate Sale is in Syracuse, Kansas which is 51 miles West of Garden City, Kansas. Copeland is about 60 miles south and east of Garden City.

Regard the Case 50, #34566 that John pointed out will be sold at an auction May 5th in KS---Roy Kite of Bird City, KS owned this engine as early as 1956--and it was sold at Roy Kite's auction in July of 1984.

Regard the Case 40, #31697 that will be sold on May 6th at a different sale in KS. This engine was owned by Big Mac McMillan as early as 1956 until at least 1962--but by 1964, William Salter already owned it. So it has been owned by Bill Salter for over 40 years. I have no information on Salter's 65.

I saw that 50 sell at Kites sale, in fact I bought the 65 Roy had owned. Was curious , I think the 50 went to Wes Pittman that day, he showed it at Bird City up until his death. Do you know if the Franks bought the 50 at Wes Pittmans sale? The 65 Wes owned I believe is still at Stockton Ks. The 65 I bought at Kites sale is owned by Dennis Paden of Norton and is at a show in Almena. Help refresh my memory, didnt the 50 need some work? 20 years and to many engines to remember. I remember Bills engines the 40 and 65 but cant tell you much about them. Bob

By the looks of the new inspection sheet and boiler report, the 50 is the one I remember needing repairs. A 90# pressure setting on the relief, would in my thinking support need of repairs....As I remember it now, it needed them when it was sold at Bird City.

Nick,
Back in the late seventies, my old steam engine buddy and I saw these engines,(I could be mistaken but dont think so, its been over thirty years).
At any rate I didnt know much about engines, but as I remember them they were pretty much fresh out of the field. In other words, I dont think they were used much by Mr Slater, if memory serves me right... The hand hole plates were still in them and I would guess unless someone has removed them, they probably are still in the boilers. Seems to me that perhaps the bunkers may need work/or replaced. Other than that they were pretty ok looking engines. That would be outside apperance only!
I plan on being at the sales sometime on friday...

Robert,

Thanks for your information. I couldn't help but notice in the pictures of both the 40 and the 65 that they had raked the ashes out on the ground. It looked if the last time they were fired they just put them in the barn and left them. Hopefully the hand hole covers were removed.

Nick,
Yea that was interesting about the ashes, I saw them also. I doubt that the hand holes were ever open, and they may not be yet. Time will tell. Are you going to the auctions? My wife and will be their, look for two tall people...lol Bob

Auction results; 50 CASE- 16,200.00, 65 CASE- 20,000.00, 40 CASE 18,OOO.00 I went to the Salter sale and did not see the 50 sell, however I saw it sell back in about 85-86 at Roy Kites sale. it will need some work. The 65 I purchased, and you can see what I've posted, I believe it to be a very nice engine. The little 40 was also a nice engine and did well. I was extremely pleased with the way the Auction was conducted, and would give the Aumann Auctions a very positive rating, good people! I don't pay too much attention to gas tractors but the Waterloo Boy brought 57,000.00, it ran as nice as they come. The Mogual, 36-37,000 it too was a nice tractor. Weather could have been a little nicer but, I thought the Salter Sale was a good one. (I think I've posted correct prices) If anyone knows who bought the two cast iron funnels and the spark arrestor, I'd like to know

Robert,
They will not let me e-mail you. Are you looking for a cast iron funnel to buy, or merely wanting to know how much they sold for and where they went? I have one, and have seen several others that people claim to be Case. Neither mine, nor the others I have seen have a part number or the eagle on them--and none of them are threaded either. If one pulls the cap off the water filler fitting on a Case boiler, one sees an internal set of threads, in addition to those external threads that the caps screws onto. The only purpose I can think of for these internal threads would be for a funnel to screw into---thus I would expect a Case funnel to have threads on it?? Has anyone seen a case iron funnel that is threaded? One with a part number and the Case Eagle cast into it? Does anyone have any insight on this? Maybe these plain unmarked and un-threaded funnels are not Case?

Chuck,
I have never seen one with threads and I have never seen one with a part number or the owl on the basketball trademark. I wouldn't have known what they were, but knew what they were for. I used to have a hexagon style Aultman-Taylor funnel. When we were plowing at the Mehmke Museum years ago, Carl had one bolted on the wooden platform beneath every Case engine's motor. I asked if he'd found a bunch of them somewhere and I believe Carl said he'd picked them up one at a time. He stated, "Those are Case funnels for filling boilers." I just took his word for it, since it fits under the filler cap of a Case steam engine. I bought one off of eBay and since they aren't marked, they have generally gone quite reasonably.

I just pulled out my Case parts catalog--they show two cast iron filling funnels. #970C, which replaced #550C (which was used on engines prior to engine number 8012) #550C had a hinged lid (the lid was #551C). This hinged lid could not have been used on any of those I have seen, so we must all be seeing the "newer" one, #970C. Darn few castings left Case's foundry without their logo and a part number. Maybe Case had some other foundry cast these funnels for them?

Yes, I would like to own a funnel and a spark arrester, their were both on the sale, (Salter) the funnels sold for 50.00 each and I left before the spark arrester sold. But so it goes... now I wish I'd bid on them.
