Photo Turner Diesel of Wolverhampton, England....

Well, I was kinda hoping someone from across the pond could help us out here with our Turner engine. My father purchased this engine nearly fifteen years ago and has decided to sell her at his retirement auction this May. We last ran it about ten years ago and it has been parked inside ever since. Anyway, before this whole "internet fad", we sent for info through relatives near Manchester but never got anything worthwhile back. Can someone pseudo-date this thing ? Any help appreciated.

15 hp SN# 6204/350/448

Thanks much,

Andrew....

I think that the serial number carries the year of manufacture, but I'll need to go back through some magazines and confirm that, and which way round it is for reading. I'd guess that 448 could be month and year.

Turners made a lot of single, twin and I think a V4 diesels, and produced their own tractor (The Yeoman IIRC) with the V4 fitted.

They went on to produce truck gearboxes after they stopped engine production, and although they are still around, I don't think there is any info available from them these days.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the response. Someone else e-mailed to say that, yes, the last 3 digits indicate month/year so this engine was built in April,1948. Well, that's more than I knew so I'm grateful for what help there is out there.

I may have a parts book around here somewhere if you need anything out of it?

Peter,
Thanks for the offer. Info on these Turners would appear to be pretty scarce over here. I am curious as to how this engine arrived in Ontario in the first place. If the soon-to-be new owner is interested,I'll let them know that you may have a parts book around. Thanks again.

Andrew....
They weren't high-volume manufacturers, but because Canada didn't have the same number of manufacturers, especially for small diesels, there was was a ready export market.

Lister and Petter also had a big market in North America.

Yeah, us Ontario collectors are quite familiar with the Lister balltops, especially with a depot right down in Toronto. We also see the Melotte cream separators around here with a sold by R.A. Lister tag on them (I think it was Babson out of Chicago that sold the Melottes south of here ??). The Petters are around and we'll see the odd JAP engine too. Of course,Ruston-Hornsby goes without saying along with the Crossley's but we have had trouble finding info about the Turners. Dad will have two 5 hp Lister balltops and one 3 hp at the sale but they need some love . There's also a 1-cyl Petter diesel, about 2 hp, and a 2-cyl JAP. We are keeping our 9.5 hp R-H 1ZHR.

Good choice! :-))

The 1ZHR should be 11hp, the 1YHR was 10hp, but that was for the last of the production line in the mid 1960's, what year is yours?

Yeah,it should be 11 hp but this was built in India under license from RH....says 9.5 hp right on the tag. I talked to Ray Hooley about it but he doesn't have info on the Indian engines. Wasn't the Ruston factory there in Poonah ? We got this engine right out of the shed where the fellow was using it to power his shop as needed . He has since upgraded to something that will start with a key .

OK, I didn't know that the Indian-produced engines had different ratings, although I am aware that these were made over there. A friend has an Indian engine not far from me, and I know of a couple of others.

Last horizontals were produced in 1965.
