I assume your are talking about the small, watercooled (w/radiator), vertical one cylinder power unit of 5HP@1800RPM. If that is the case, it says Atlas-Lanova Diesel on the radiator and they indeed were marketed by Atlas-Imperial in Oakland, CA. These engines were manufactured by the Atlas-Lanova Division in Mattoon, Il. They have a 3.125" Bore X 3.75" Stroke and the single cylinder versions have a model number similar to 1LN29. These engines were made in the late 30's and maybe the very early 40's.

I think the $500 figure is fair, that is what I paid for mine almost 10 years ago :-)

If it is in fact a Lanova type engine then it is well worth getting hold of. Lanova patented a type of combustion chamber that bears his name on all engines with this type of chamber, like the Acro, Ricardo etc.
Even in Europe these are fairly rare now, most were Guldner-Lanova but there are others. Peter |

"Atlas-Thornburg engine with Lanova combustion system, Bosch injection gear, 3.125 X 3.75 bore and stroke, 5hp, up to 4 cylinder versions available". Picture attached, the quality isn't too hot! Peter |

Now that I see the pic, I remember years ago seeing one of these on a fishing boat in California-- the "City of Eureka" it was used to run a compressor to build starting air for the main engine, a 6-cylinder Atlas Imperial 250 HP, direct reversible. It was used frequently, and was highly regarded for it's reliability. The fisherman also had a 110-vdc generator arranged so that he could switch belts and charge his batteries in an emergency.
BTW -- the 250 Atlas-Imperial was replaced after a fire, by a 12v-92 Detroit, which did a poor job, although being rated at over 4 times the power. Not only would it not tow as large a net, but the vibration from the gmc rattled screws loose all over the boat. They also complained it would rattle the coffee cups off the hooks in the galley!
