Hi everyone,
I'll admit right off that Antique Engines are not my hobby. I have been searching online for many hours trying to find some pictures of what the coil looks like inside a Battery Operated Ignition from the years of 1910-1920. I'm building something that requires a Battery (or Low Tension?) ignition coil from this era. So I'm just trying to figure out what it looks like so I can possibly build my own. Were there many different designs for this ignition from 1910-1920? Is there a place where I can see exactly what the coil looks like inside? Or maybe someone can provide a photo? I think the attached photo is the kind of ignition I am talking about. So I just need to see what it looks like inside and to know if there are many different designs. I would truly appreciate it if anyone could help me on this. Thanks for your time. Kind Regards, Andy |

Just to clarify. I need to know what the actual coil looks like or maybe someone can possibly describe it to me. Is it a fine wire wrapped around an iron or magnet core many times? Or is it more of a larger gauge wire shaped into a cylindrical tube with the windings more spaced out? Thanks again.
Kind Regards, Andy |

If it is a low tension coil, it is many turns of about .035" diameter wire, wrapped around a laminated soft iron core. The core iron is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter, and there are about 1,000 to 1500 turns of wire about it. Originally, 4, or 5 0f the old type B -Carbon - Zinc Dry cells, in series were used, (2" diameter x 6" tall). These cells may still be available at a good battery store.

Here's some information I compiled about low-tension ignition including a coil I made:
