Can anyone identify this engine? I found it while poking around on my aunt & uncle's farm. It was set up for stationary use on a saw.
Picture Thanks, Jim

I agree that it looks like a Fordson engine, but I don't think they ever used a magneto like that?

I agree with Denis, there is no way that's a "Fordson" engine of any year. I have several and there isn't even a close resemblance. The English model "N" Fordson has the maggy on the other side, and still uses the same bell housing as the early American and Irish model "F". That has an automotive type bell housing that may even be light commercial.
Looking at the position of the head studs I think it's only 4 cyl, and it looks like a 4 point magneto. If you look closely you can see the cylinders themself under the water jacket. It looks like a fairly light chassis its mounted on, my guess would be 1920s car of some kind, only a guess possibly something like a "Maxwell" or maybe "Durant". ![]() Afraid I am no expert on vintage cars, hope you find out what it is. A front on look at the radiator shell would help greatly, looks to be a nickel, probably, or chrome, possibly, plated shell making it late teens to mid 20s.
An interesting piece of back yard practicality. Peter |

Hi Jim;
Try Hercules truck engines. These were used in dozens of different vehicles,trucks, fork trucks, tractors, etc. Dan |
