I have an L Lister that uses an M-L CK-1 just like in the photos of your engine in your previous post. I guess early engines had a "flick" type M-L magneto from what I can tell, but mine is like yours, from what I can see.

Seems like a decent magneto, but there is no impulse or any means of retarding spark to start. I have not had a problem with kick-back, which is good because the engine needs to be cranked to start.

I don't think I could start it flipping the flywheels.

Your J looks more than a little bit like my L....

I bought some reprint literature on eBay and the same stuff pops up over and over so don't try to outbid anyone for that. Same with decals.

Frankly, I haven't bothered reading the literature I bought because I got into running order thanks to help on this website. Search this site for Lister and/or look at my old postings and you should find most of the technical info or links to it that I utilized- thanks to Listerdiesel.

One thing I never quite figured out was if I could remove the upper main bearing retainer casting with the flywheel still on the crankshaft. I needed to look in there to see the valve gear timing marks which can be seen if the upper retainer is removed but not only could I not get it off, a couple little pieces of the retainer flange were already broken off before I touched it.

Removing the flywheel on that side of my "L" to gain enough space to pull the retainer out horizontally would be seriously problematic: There is a massive, two-step pulley in the way and it has a broken off set screw so that pulley isn't going anywhere soon. (Hmmm......seems like somebody else followed this same path a while ago but I don't much care for the results of their "work".)

I was able to actually remove the idler gear, re-install it, and check the timing marks with the use of a mirror but I still wonder about that retainer. Does it have a nosing that prevents it from being lifted straight up and off?

I need to build a trolley for mine. It can be shoved around on smooth concrete but that just ain't gonna get very far.......

There used to be a link on here to a UK website that has a many of Lister enthusiasts postin and lot's of photos, too. See if you can find that, maybe ?

Can tell you now Kid the flywheel has to come off, then the lower bearing cap , the the top cap, learnt that mineself, once you do it its easy, but beware the top cap has a location pin in it for the slipper, so dont force it, will cheack your old posts . thanks Kid,
