Default Slide valve engine drawings

Does anyone know of a book or drawings that fully details the valve machanism on slide valve, open flame ignition engines? I have the insane idea in my head that I might want to build one of these engines someday. Being a machinist gives you good ideas and going to Coolsprings a few years ago did'nt help that any. I know that I will never have the chance to own one of these engines, but to me, an engine cant get any cooler than that, and to build one would be awesome. ANYTHING can be done, and I just might have to do it Thanks for any info.

Tanner, I'll try some closeups of Paul's Otto drawing. My Hiscox book is yellowed and doesn't photo well. There is a lenghy discription of how it works. I can photo it in higher resolution and email direct if you like.

Tanner, contact John Rex in Chelmsford, Ma. and he can probably help, as he was the primary restorer on one of the Coolsprings slide valve OTTO'S. He will be at Coolsprings this week.

Also, there is a model[scale] of a slide valve at the Owlshead Transportation Museum, Owlshead, Maine that might help you.

Tanner

This might be of help also... Can make more detailed pics if you want, I also have some diagrams of the conrod and crank that drives the slide valve, but have to dig the book out of one of the boxes that still are waiting to be unpacked after our move one year ago

Best regards
Marcel

Does anyone have an email address or phone number for John Rex, or the email to the Coolsprings museum? Thanks

There is an outstanding book by TM Goodeve Titles "on Gas Engines" It has the best written description and drawings of slide valve operation I know of. This book was published in England from the late 1880's until about 1900 and from time to time is available on Ebay. Bring your wallet though, they usually bring several hundred $
