Dave, injection pumps have no seals, they rely on a real precise fit between the pump plunger in it's barrel. Refurbish generally includes chrome plating of the parts and grinding back to acceptable tolerance, an expensive procedure. I know because I had a Demco pump for my Fairbanks done, I couldn't find a replacement. Your Bamford probably has a CAV pump which are fairly common. You can probably find a good used one at a good diesel shop.
You also can try a few things. The plunger may be stuck at the top of it's stroke or possibly the delivery valve at the top of the pump is stuck shut. A careful dissasembly and cleaning may cure the problem, but if you do that be very careful to observe the position of the plunger and the rack and the index marks as you take it apart, or take it and have it checked out. I can email you a scan of the internal parts of a Bosch pump which is virtually identical to tha CAV.

Have a look at the article on our website:

http://www.oldengine.org/members/die...es/diesel1.htm

and the pictures of the pump innards before you do anything.

Most frequent cause of problems is the delivery valve in the top of the pump stuck or the element jammed up. DON'T force anything when stripping, the element has two 'ears' or tags that break off very easily, then it is expensive to get another element assy.

They went out of production some years ago, but most delivery valves and elements are still available in the UK. The basic pump was common to many UK engines such as Lister etc., but the element has a different spiral/helix so you cannot do a swap for a Lister pump.

The ears/tabs of the element plunger will have a number stamped on one of them, let me have that number and I'll cross-reference it to a CAV part number. We may have a new one on the shelf, but if not they are probably still available from our local diesel shop and their suppliers.

We hold Lister injector nozzles for the 3/1 5/1 10/2 and 9/1 engines.

Peter

thanks for the info

I am not clear about how to remove the element

I ahve the top half of the pump off, can see the lunger from the bottm, and have unscrewed the top piece that connect to the injector line.

how do I remove the innards?

Dave

The bottom piston is retained by a circlip that runs inside the body. Take the clip out and the piston will usually come out, pushed by the return spring.

Once out, the element is retains by a small collet and then it can be removed in two pieces, take the inner away first and keep it clean.

The element outer and the housing it sits in with the gear teeth on will come out at that point.

Dave, I'm about an hour and half from Philly, bring the pump here and I'll give you a hand and I'll also give you a 25 cent tour of my engines.
