Question Need Help With Maytag 92

I've got a few questions about the maytag model 92, I just bought my first one so please bare with me.

Will the engine run on unleaded gas? or do you need to add an additive?
What kind of two cycle oil is best to use?
What is the proper gas/oil mixture?
What is the correct plug to use on this model? and how about the model 72?

Any Info will be greatly appreciated

hi, to answer your questions, well, some anyway, the gas doesnt need any additives, just the type of gas you run in your mower will do nicely, im a little fuzzy in memory in oil mix but i beleive they mix 16:1, im not sure though but i beleive thats what they run, and 16 to 1 would be 8 ounces of 2 cycle oil to 1 gallon of gas, now i could need corrected if im wrong but i think thats what they mix to. there is really no "best" or better 2 cycle oil, they all burn and smoke just about the same. it's ok to use as long as it's 2 cycle oil, and the bottle actually says that....and, i dont know what plug they use, but someone will answer that question i think.

Spark plug size is 1/2 inch pipe thread. Any local parts place should be able to get you a Motorcraft F11 that will work for a few dollars. Ebay usually has antique plugs of that size. Champion made the original plugs with Maytag script.

On the model 72, original plug was the equivalent of the champion H-10 a 1/2" reach, 14 mm plug. A better looking plug is the J 17-LM, or the CJ-8, however, these are resister plugs, and you will have to close the gap dpwn to about .020, to keep from building excess resistance in the hi voltage circut. Also note that the J series plugs are 3/8" reach. If you want to go back to the H series, after using them, you will have to clean off the threads within the heads, due to the change in reach. Original gap is .037 per plug. DO NOT STOP ENGINE BY PULLING OFF THE SPARK PLUG WIRES The 72 series engines use a pass thru ignition system: Spark starts at the coil, goes thru the plug, jumps the airgap, passes thru the plug body, the block, the second plug body, the second airgap, the secong plug, and back to the coil. The coil is completely independant of the engine frame and chassis. If you pull off one wire, the spark completes the circut, by burning thru the secondary windingd, thus ruining the coil. To properly stop engine - open air cap on intake, wide open. When the engine has burned off the excess fuel, it will quit. The model 82, and 92, take either a model A-25, or a model 34 long reach 1/2" pipe thread based plug

Oil mix is 16:1 (1 cup NON Detergent oil, in 1 gallon of gas). Mix it well, before putting it in the tank! This mix is OK for all MAYTAG built engines.

Thanks for the Info. Just the details a new maytag owner (72 & 92) can use.
