This has been at my grandfather's for 40 or 50 years I guess. My grandfather NEVER parts with anything. Anyway he said if I will come get it I can have it. Is it worth the time to go get it?

I'd say it's 1950 or older. If you can read the numbers on the nameplate, there is a chart on this site, page 9 that will give you date of manufacture.

It appears to have an add on electric start, definitely interesting. If it turns over, chances are it will run and even weld.
Is it worth picking up? Sort of depends on how far you have to go and if owning your grandfather's machine means anything to you.

Good to know. It is not his machine. My great grandmother had a quarry on the property she leased out. Long story short, they did'nt pay her for something so she kicked them off the property and wouldn't let them get the equipment.

It is only a couple hundred miles....maybe I will go get it.

Hard to tell scale, and I can't make out tag numbers on my machine, but if it's a Herc 6 (looks like from counting headbolts) engine could be a QXLD3, 237ci (came on 300Amp and SAE300 models) or a JXD, 320ci (came on 400Amp and SAE400 models).
Don't know why parts catalog had 200,300,400 etc "Amp" listings, and then separate listings for "SAE"200, 300, 400 etc; don't know if they're actually different models or not.
As to firing up and welding, mice love to build nests in these, and chew on the wiring for recreation...
If you decide it's more trouble than it's worth to fool with (all too often just a labor of love) you shouldn't have much trouble finding interested parties; better to have it parted out than to just scrap or let ruin.

I had a Ilncoln 400 amp with JXD Herc. engine, surplus.

Don't mean to discourage you but, I couldn't afford to warm it up a little before welding, had to work fast cause mine was kinda thirsty. It was a heavy and well built machine. The military could afford to use it,I couldn't.
