Does anyone have, or know where to find, drawings for building a scale model threshing machine? A friend of mine wants to build one but hasn't had any luck finding plans. He didn't mention a specific brand or what size he wants to build, but anything would probably be helpful.
I've seen pictures of a model Case steel seperator in some photos from Rollag, and Rough & Tumble has picture of a model they have in their museum (Frick?). There has to be blueprints out there somewhere. Any help would be appreciated. |

Hi Brad,
I've been around model building for many years and have seen numerous models of seperators but have never heard of anyone talking about drawings for one. Most of the ones that were built came from someone taking dimensions off of a full sized one. Apparently these people were good machinists and modelmakers but not draftsmen. I'm not saying that there's not some floating around somewhere, I'm just saying I've never heard of any. If someone does know of any I would also be interested in obtaining a set. gbritnell |

That seems to be the problem. My friend said he's been all over the country looking for plans but nobody has any. I've seen plenty of pictures of model seperators. There is a 1/2 scale steel Case separator pictured on Rollag's website and I have a picture my great uncle took in 1958 of a 1/4 scale Case separator.
On a positive note, just yesterday I got my copy of "How to Build a 4" Case Traction Engine & Water Wagon" by Ralph W. Andres. It is a reprint of the articles printed in Live Steam magazine in the 70's and are the same plans my friend used to build his 1/3 scale Case. In the foreward and on the back cover it mentions that Ralph Andres is working on plans for a 1/3 scale sawmill and 1/3 scale threshing machine. Unfortunately the original article was printed in the 70's, but the book was reprinted in 1997. There is contact info for Mr. Andres, so I'll give that a try. I hope he's still around. |

I wonder if Case Historical might not have the prints for a full sized thresher
, then you could scale them any size you wanted. I'd inquire, it can't hurt. (Copies might cost a bit more than you want to spend though) Just a thought Last edited by Allen; 07-18-2006 at 11:33 AM. |

I've seen people talk about looking up case engine drawings on microfiche. I don't know how accessible that is though. It might be better than the alternative, buying a full size thresher and reverse engineering it.

Update:
I got in contact with a model company in Canada that has 1/4 scale plans for a wood sided Rumely separator. I am still searching for other possibilities, but this is good news so far. I love the internet!! The company is: New West Live Steam www.newwestlivesteam.com They don't have the thresher listed on their website, but I contacted them through email and they confirmed that they have these drawings and copies are available. |

Just a thought... But if you actually plan to thresh with it, don't forget there isn't any such plant as "scale" wheat
...so you'll basically have to use cut down full size straw slats and screens. On that note, I wonder how small the cylinder teeth can be and still be usable?

New west live steam is your best bet! Also you could contact Ray Wangler. He is a member of Harrys. His father is building a Rumely threshing machine. I also have a friend that had a set of Case Threshing machine prints (I believe came from New West Live Steam back went it was called Hartland Scale models). But I can't remember who he sold them to. But if you wanted me to track them down e-mail me and I can give it a try.

My Dad and I finished the Rumley from Hartland, now New West. It's a wood bodied machine, lots of challenges. Brian Manning, (often published in Steam Traction) built one also. The plans are pretty good, but I've heard of other models that thresh better. Even if your friend builds another machine, these plans would be good for reference, not too expensive.
I'd certainly give your friend any information or foresight I have. Ray |

Ray I know this is an old message but I have come accross it while searching for info on Case threshers. I have built a 1/3rd scale Case 65hp traction engine which I take around shows here in the UK. I would like to build a Case Thresher to go with it and I see that you have built a thresher. I am looking for a general arrangment drawing copy with some measuments on is so that I can make my own scale drawings. Can you be of any help if you can all costs would be covered by me. I know this is a long shot but who knows, thanks for reading this.

If anyone wants 2" scale thresher plans, Model Engineer produces a set of plans for a British Ransomes Class A Thrasher (Not Thresher).
