Cool Maytag 92 Fuel Problem

Picked up a model 92 Maytag at the Adams TN show a couple of weeks ago. Will only run if I keep covering the intake with my hand. Don't believe it has a check ball in the fuel pickup. Could this be the problem? Thanks for any and all advice.

Frank:

If it runs with the air intake closed off (full choke) you have either a significant air leak or you aren't getting enough fuel. I think it would run with or without the check ball if it had the correct air/fuel mixture. I've run one with no check ball for a good number of years only because I didn't know it was missing until I started to take it apart for a cosmetic restoration.

Frank.

For the Maytag manual go to this site:

Thanks for the posts, put new gasket on the carb and smeared it with pertoleum jelly so I don't think I have a serious air leak. Think I will take a look at the air valve in the carb next. Thanks for your help.

Frank,
check the air valve, also check the fuel pick up. There should be a check valve, and a screen. Make sure the screen is clean. After that, remove the fuel adjustment neevle, and blow air thru the needle mount, with the pick up tube removed. Clean the entire assembly with carb cleaner, and blow out all passages. Make sure you have clean - fresh (less than 30 days old) fuel at 16-1 ratio - SAE 30 non detergent oil (1 cup/gallon). Re install fuel needle, and turn in until it bottoms. The pointer should be to the extreme right, nearly hitting the tank, when the carb is installed. To start - Fill tank to bottom fo fuel fill therads. Open fuel valve to extreme left (pointer should hit fuel tank lid), and kick over several times. Once engine starts, turn needle until pointer is straight up, and fine tune from there. Unless there is a fuel flow problem, you should never have to choke a 92. Make it a habit to top off engine every time you start it. Be sure to drain tank thoroughly at the end of the show season, and hick oveer engine with fuel valve wide open, to make sure all fuel is out of the engine.

Frank,
Good luck getting 'er running! When I restored my first one I had it rebuilt, ready for paint and decided to run it first. After several failed attempts I gave up and it sat in the shop for a year. Then I had a workday at our house for our EDGE & TA Br. 8 group and we got it running. It's now completely restored and is the strongest running Maytag I have ever seen!

Now I have several 92's in pieces in various states of restoration! Watch out, their addicting!

Francis,
Thank you SO much for that link!!!! I had run across that site some time ago but couldn't remember how to find it again when I needed too! Advanced stages of CRS I guess.

Live and learn, put a check-ball in the fuel pick-up tube and she runs like a top.
Thanks to all who posted advice.
