Exclamation Wico EK sparks where it shouldn't!

I'm working on an EK that's got me stumped. I've repaired quite a few of these things but never had this happen. When I trip the mag I get a little spark in my test lead but a nice blue on across the points! Mag has been stripped down, cleaned and assembled with all new insulation. I tripple checked for any shorts but found none. Also tripple checked my wires, they're all good and going to the right spots. Condenser is brand new, mag has been charged on a very powerful charger. Points are set 3/32 for type 2 drive and are in great shape. Nothing binds, there is no oil or grease slopped all over the place. I'm out of ideas here. Looking things over I see nothing out of place or wrong.

Nick,
In case you don't have a copy of the Wico EK maintenance manual, I have it stored on my computer. If you want a copy I will gladly send a copy to you. Since I don't know how to send an attachment to this message, I will need your email address.
If anyone else needing a copy of the Wico EK manual, I will also send you a copy. However, I will also need your email address.

Francis

sounds like either you have a bad coil, or a defective condenser. Have you checked the condenser out? Andrew

Brand new condensors can be just as defective as those that are older than dirt.

Hello all,

Just got a copy of the Wico manual from Francis. Spent about an hour setting mine up properly. What a differance! My Hercules that I just put the piston in has always been a little fussy to start, not horrable but just a little touchy. After setting the mag up it almost jumped to life. Hit on the first pull through, and, as soon as I retarded the timing fired right off. Highly reccomended reading. Thanks again Francis .

I swapped the condenser out with another new 1 and same problem. Andrew you might b right about a bad coil although I've never had 1 that was bad behave like this before. 1st time 4 everything though...

How far is the gap on your test lead? if too far it will jump across inside.
