Default Need help on Maytag Model 92 carbs

I am having trouble figuring out the ages of the round top vs the square/flat top carbs used on the model 92's. The ones I have seen have had air cleaners or screens on both types. Since they are so easy to change out, it cannot be assumed that any 92 today has the original carb on it.
I have checked the "Maytag multi-motors" volume II by Marvin Frahm and he states on page 18 that "The early carbs had a square top for the air intake." However when I check the "Maytag Multi-Motor" book sold by the Maytag Club and compiled by Larry and Marge Benton using input from several well known maytag collectors, it states on "S-Parts Page 61" that "The first carbs had a round top where the screen is mounted in, the rest had a round top".

Can anyone clear this up? It probably doesn't make much difference on the majority of the common 92's, but I would like to at least have my side exhaust and Model 19 engines to be correct.

Thanks Don A

Don,
The square top carburetors were used at the very end of production. You see them scattered around on all the 92 style engines because they were what you got when you bought a replacement carburetor after the the square top carb was introduced. There are a lot of square top carbs on the early side exhaust engines.

The side exhaust engines and a few of the early straight exhaust engines used a round top carb with the air valve set screw coming straight out the back, and there were no dimples on each side of the carb. I can get some pictures if you would like to see what I am talking about.

Thanks for the info. Guess I will need to look for an old style carb for my side exhaust-it now has a square top one!

Tom,
I myself would appreciate any pictures you could share of the different types of carbs. I am just about done restoring a side exhaust 92 made in April '27 that is as far as I can tell original. At least all the parts seem to be the right type if not the "original" parts.

I am still trying to learn all the different tells if you will, of the parts. Such as the carbs and the backing plate sizes.

Steve
