I have a VN 12 and use it about every day, I have a Carroll dividing head for it and have a good selection of 5V collets. It is powered by a 1 1/2 HP DC motor with a solid state speed control, I also have the right angle head adaptor for it which is great for boring cylinders and line boring mains on some of the model engines I build. I also have a VN #20 powered by a 3HP DC motor with solid state control, that is equipped with a complete set of collets, rotary table, a universal VN dividing head with all the driving gears plus many other accessories. My son has a VN size 1/2, a great little machine, the only one I have ever saw it takes 5V collets.
I LOVE THAT #12- A GREAT MACHINE Dave |

I have a 3/4 collet for the VN # 20 but not for the # 12. The largest I have for the # 12 is 5/8. I had considered making one for the # 12 but I think it would be a little hard on the spindle because if I had one I would probably use the largest end mill I have with a 3/4 shank and end up in trouble. I will use the # 20 for my heavy work Dave |

I hadn't thought about it too much ,I have shell mills in excess of 4.5", 2.5"deep and have yet to stall it . I have a ton of 3/4 end mills and thought it would be great to use them. When my old employer went put of business they liquidated everything but the machines I have complete tap and die sets from 2mm to 36mm and 5 40tpi to 2.5" numerous boring bars and end mills of every dimension .The only thing I couldn't get was a vise . My current employer put my machine up for sealed bid and that is how I got that . I grabbed the 3/4 tools because I thought I could get a Bridgeport when they closed the doors.

Hello All: I also have a VN#12. It is a 1941 model from a Navy Battleship. I have had it for over thirty years. Have most of the accessories to go with it. Have built over forty model engines with it over the years. Have two dividing heads and cut my own gears for models and full size engines also. Great little machine. I have added power feed to the knee and use this for boring a lot. I use Trav-a-dial indicators for X & Y axis. Works great for me.

I have a 1/2. Here are some resources:
There is a Van Norman group on Yahoo. Jeff Beck at Tools4Cheap.net (NOT .com) sells 5V collets, end mill holders, and shell mill arbors. I have not found a source for horizontal arbors. They are great machines. Enjoy. |

I have one of the Van Norman boring bars as well. It does a nice job for its size and just a fast as the large boring machine. I also have a VN piston grinder and a crankshaft grinder. Both get used for many other projects.

I've got a Van Norman #26, which I believe was built in 1943 from the serial number listings I've seen. 50-taper spindle with 3 HP, and 2 HP on the power feed.
VN made great machines, real workhorses. -Carl |

I own a V-N #6. It was my first mill. A Bridgeport clone supplements it, now; but, I'll never get rid of my #6.
I got very lucky when I bought mine; all of the literature came with it. Much of it pertains to the #12 because V-N never published an operating manual for the #6. I scanned all the paperwork and blueprints and put it onto a CD. Once-upon-a-time I made it available on too generous terms; now, to recover my costs I have to charge $10 for it. So far, I've never had anyone complain about the CD or the amount I charge for it. If interested, send me a PM. Orrin |
