Well, it happened. The Jacobs chuck on my ˝" Black & Decker drill motor wouldn't close completely. Cleaning it didn't help. The instructions (
http://www.kd-tools.com/disassembly.htm) to disassemble the Jacobs chuck is straight forward. However, the detail on how to remove the jaws is some what incomplete. After the outer barrel is removed, the individual jaws must be in the completely open position before any jaws can be removed. Each jaw was removed (some had to be tapped out with a punch) while the other two were left in the open position. Note: each jaw has a specific location on the chuck body. Each jaw was individually removed, entirely clean, oiled, and reinserted into the chuck body. To get the jaws to move easily, some work with the Dremel was needed to polish some small burrs out. After checking the movement of each jaw, the individual jaws were again placed in open position, the split nut was temporary installed and held in place with a ty wrap. The nut assembly was rotated to moved the jaws from the open position to the closed position. Once the operation of the chuck was verified, the ty wrap was removed, the nut was lubricated with grease, and the outer barrel was replaced (

The chuck works fine.
