Question Source for metal

What kinds of places can I look to find 1/8 inch thick steel 3 or 4 inches wide and a couple of feet long? Some one decided to make an antique rear discharge riding more into a side dischage and I'd like to replace the chunk that was cut out.

Possibly McMaster-Carr would have sheet metal in those dimensions. You may also try your local scrap yard to see if they have "end of roll" sections from stamping plants. I've salvaged some sections that long, although 6" wide, from work to make electrolysis anodes in the past. Typically the first and last 18-36" of a coil are unusable and get tossed.

Got a piece here that would fit just right, but there's a small matter of the Atlantic Ocean in the way! :-))

We have the 'luxury' of a couple of good sheet metal companies that supply us with all our metalwork for our products, and they ALWAYS have a rack of offcuts in the shop that we can pick through when we need a piece that is not worth cutting a new 8ft X 4ft up for.

Find your nearest metalbashers and ask if they have an offcut, flash a couple of $ bills at them and they will usually cut it to size as well. Offering to pay up front usually forestalls any payment request and you'll get it for free :-))

1/8" is 10gauge or 3mm over here in the UK, and yes, I do have a piece almost exactly that size sitting on the metal rack downstairs.

Leonard; 1/8" barstock comes in several different standard widths. If you have a steel retailer nearby, they'll usually have a rack full of cutoffs, as the bars come in 20' lengths, usually. They often cut the bars down as per customer's needs. The two yards here let you sort through the "drop rack" and pick out the pieces you want and charge a per-foot price. Ask if they've got used metal, since it'll be a lot cheaper and just as good.

I have some thinner gauge sheet metal available and also some stainless steel sheet metal if there is a need out there somewhere. Sorry, I don't have anything in steel stock 1/8" thick.

Usually small town welding and repair shops have a good supply of metal rods, angles, channels and flat stock.
