i was given a sears generator model #580321410 2750 watt. it was working fine and when i tried to plug my welder into it it quit working. now it only puts out 3or4 volts with a voltmeter on it. what would have quit? would it have been the voltage regulator? also, where would i find parts for this? thanks.

Aloha,
Click on the link below and then click on parts on the left side of the window. On line 2, type in your mod # 580321410 and it should give you a parts list. Mahalo, doogdoog Link: http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomfr...w.sears.com%2F |

Chevy-
In addition to Doogdoog's suggestion, you might call 1-800-252-1698 or email partsdirect@customerservice.sears.com for further assistance. There are also local Sears Service Centers where parts can be ordered. They can usually view assembly drawings with parts lists on their computer terminal. You can also to order a manual. The 580 part of the model number refers to Generac portable equipment, which has been acquired by Briggs and Stratton. Some older pre-briggs manuals had a lot of service information in them. I found your generator at the Sears site, and see that there is a 30 Amp fuse on the control panel, located between two rocker switches. I assume you checked to see if it had blown. The voltage you measured might be the result of leakage current across an open fuse. Fred |

the fuse is good, not broke or burnt. any other ideas?

time to get out the multimeter and open it up for inspection and testing. You could have blown a diode etc. There will be some part in there (diode bridge) that will rectify some of the AC output to DC to feed the regulator and exciter which controls the field of the generator. You may find that the regulator is the problem and it's all encapsulated and you cannot get into it to check any components.
The fact that your generator makes 3 or 4 volts means that there is some residual magnetic field there and the stator may be good. If you use a battery to supply the field as a test, you can determine if it is good before you buy parts to repair the regulator etc. The generator should make voltage when you excite it with the battery source. What voltage it makes depends on what the normal no load excitation voltage is compared to the battery voltage that you use. |
