I have acquired a neglected 1950 era model 4425 1.5 hp evenrude outboard. Does anyone know what the gap should be between the ends of the coil and the flywheel? When I took the cover off, the ends were rubbing on the flywheel, that just doesn't seem correct. Any suggestions for setting the gap for the points? Finally, what modern plug should this engine have. The plug was broken off in the head. I don't have a repair book, and my local dealer didn't have any information for an engine this old. The Evenrude site lists repair and parts books for about $60, but I only paid $10 for the engine and I don't know if I have spark yet, and it will need some parts in the carb and fuel pump, so I won't spend that money just yet.
The engine was frozen, but I have managed to take it apart without damaging anything. I can't get the screw holding the lower unit bearing assembly out. It turns about 1/4 turn and just sticks. I would like to replace the prop shaft seal. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks for any information Roger Roger |

Thank you Ed. I cleaned the points, set the plug, point and coil gaps and still have no spark. I think I will need to take this in to someone who knows what they are doing to.

If its like the 3 hp there should be a boss on the spark advance housing that aligns the magneto, other wise use a couple thicknesses of masking tape on the magneto tips and adjust so the flywheel will rotate by without stripping the tape off. Point Gap should be ~.018". If the magneto covering is cracked and blistered its probably shot, otherwise in my experience you should at least get some spark. Make sure the pin inside the magneto where the spark plug wire connects is still there, I have seen a lot of older mags with broken pins. Pretty much any condenser you can find for a small 2 cycle engine (or spark plug for that matter) that fits will work to verify spark. You can get the correct replacement for both pieces from sierra. The lower units show up from time to time on ebay. Hope that helps,

Thank you for the suggestions.
The coil did not look bulged or leaking so I took the head aprt and found a loose wire. A bit of heat and a drop of solder and it was tight. I cleaned and reassembled the head, spun it over and have nice blue spark. It jumps at least 1/4 inch. The lower of two carb needle vlaves was missing when I got it, now that I have spark I wanted to order one. I stopped by the dealer, he dug through some old dusty books and found a parts diagram. The number comes up "vintage" but the dealer thought they could get one and I put in an order ($20 with shipping). The tank is a two piece affair, and it has old dried brown sealer around the joint so someone has had it appart. Several of the aluminum screw heads look like they were over tightened, but the tank doesn't leak so I will leave it. On the bottom of the tank is what looks to be a toggle fuel pump. The insides are gone and it has a shop made aluminum plate over it. The diagram at the dealer showed two small springs, two discs and a membrane, but these parts came up "unavailable". He thought the only way I might find those parts is from a junked motor. I don't know if that pump will be needed or if I can get fuel to drain to the carb by gravity. I think I will try to get it to run with the straight fuel line from the tank to the carb as it was plumbed when I got it. If I can get it running, I will work on the lower unit seal, maybe try to replace it over the saft without removal of the bearing assembly. I really do appreciate the suggestions. Thanks Roger |

Roger, your motor is a 1948=51 depending on the serial number. Recommended plug is a J6J,gap .30, pts., gap .20, oil to gas, is 1/3 pint to a gallon. Don Dwiggins, will more than likely have your manual for a few dollars. Contact Don a 479-641-2413. You may want to visit the Antique Outboard Motor Site, search AOMCI. They have a free classified section and question/answer section. Good luck with your motor.
