Question Hercules 4 cylinder ID?

Hello all,

Picked up a Cletrac with the Hercules 4 cylinder engine. Anyone know where to look for engine ID and serial numbers?

Thanks

In a sense you have 2 choices of engines. The small HG used some form of a Hercules IX engine (either IXA or IXK). The serial number is stamped on the opposite side of the manifold near the top on a flat spot. The other one would be the OOC Hercules which was used on several models. The serial number for a Cletrac if not an HG is mounted on the firewall on the engine side. If an unstyled it is on the fuel tank. Is this a Diesel?

Thanks for the info. It is a 20C made from 1933 to 1936. Did a little exploring with the pressure washer. The engine serial number is 227737. The 20C engine numbers are supposed to be from 223630 and up so that number sounds reasonable. The other side had the following cast into it, C42, 22200 D, and CWC. It is a gas four cylinder flat head.

I didn't find a source to cross the engine serial number to year manufactured. Cletrac.org has the basic information on the 20C tractor including the tractor start and stop serial numbers and the engine starting number. No guarantees that the engine is the original but it seems likely. Looks like I may have found a magneto for the engine but the bracket is also missing. Once I get the Ajax going I'll get serious about this project.
