How low cost is low cost? Having something custom built is usually pricey. Even if the parts are out of the scrap bin, most guys will want a little something for their labor.
If you've got around $400 to spend, then a Burnett headless engine is a decent runner, they are made from aluminum barstock. |

You can keep an eye on e-bay. Those type of 'freelance' engines come up now and then. They run in the 300-600 range depending on size and quality of workmanship.

Does anyone have a pic or details on these two engines? Are these 4 cycle exhaust valve governored? Is catfish hollow the only place to get them?
Burnett "Billy Boy II" aluminum barstock headless engine with finned cylinder reminiscent of old air cooled farm engines. A good runner, this affordable almost ready to run engine is sold ready to paint, less electrics, 6v car type coil required. Burnett Vertical headless, latest incarnation of the "Billy Boy" series. A freelance barstock model. A good runner, this affordable almost ready to run engine is sold ready to paint, less electrics, 6v car type coil required. |

Hi, These aren't exhaust valve governored but they are hit-miss engines & they're all cast iron. Not sure if it's what your looking for but I sell them finished-running for $600. Also keep an eye on ebay cause an engine may slip thru somewhere cheap.
good luck, -nick here's my site; http://newrmc.20megsfree.com/ |

Last winter I built the Webster Engine. I had cabin fever sooooo bad and bored to death. IF you have access to a lathe and mill, this is a very fun and rewarding engine to make. Except for the rings, points, sparkplug and gears everything else was made from scrap bar stock I had lying around. When it came time to start the little critter and it actualy ran I had to pat myself on my back. Right now I have it on my bench and when I need a therapy session, I crank her up and run a tank of fuel thru it. Sounds like a 327 chevy with a high lift cam in it. Ain't this hobby fun???

Hi, yeah that's a Columbus running in the picture. I wish I had a model of one! Not sure of anyone selling finished models or kits of them right now but I'm sure someone will one of these days.
