Default Unidentified engine/compressor unit

Looked at an engine/air compressor unit today & need help identifying it. The engine looks to be about 2 to 2 1/2 hp. The mixer appears home made & the lever between mixer & intake valve is just an on-off switch for a buzz coil, I think. Muffler is unique but does not show well in my photo. I think original gas tank was mounted to front of hopper on the two raised bosses & four tapped holes. The inertia governor in flywheel looks Bull Dog-ish as does the rocker arm arrangement. I couldn't get a good look at the latchout. Any help appreciated.

Hi Doug, I have never seen a B&E "Bull Dog" that looked like that but man some of the parts sure look like it! You know what the other thing I saw the other day was a 3 HP Bull "PUP" bull pup was embossed in the hopper and the tag says 3HP and it is BIG. I always thought the bull pup was the name for the little guy! You just never know what you will come accross in this hobby! Mike

Mike,
Bull Pups came in 1 1/2, 3 & 6 hp. I have a 1 1/2, have seen a 3 hp but have never seen a 6 hp.

I found a photo on Ted Brookover's site of an Ideal carb which looks just like this one. Not sure if it is original to this engine/compressor but I don't think it is home-made anymore.
Does anyone know if Bates & Edmonds made engine/compressor units?

Well, did not get many replies to original post. I have the engine home now & have a little more information.
Bore of engine is 3 5/8".
Bore of compressor about 3".
Stroke of both is 3 1/2".
Flywheels are 2 5/8" wide by 16" diameter.
Engine & compressor con rods share the same crankshaft journal.
Engine has oil in crankcase & is splash lubricated. The main bearings & camshaft have oil cups. Previous owner installed lubricator in tapped hole in crankcase but I think it should have some sort of vent instead.
Most engine & compressor castings have three small casting numbers with a 'C' prefix.
Both flywheels; engine cylinder/hopper; and compressor cylinder have a single 1/2" tall raised cast "L".
The mixer appears to be a no name Lunkenheimer.
The cam gear is stamped "Nutall" and appears to be a stock gear.
Hopper opening has removable cup like cover.
The muffler seems unique although it looks similar in shape to one on a 16 hp Bull Dog on page 157 in BYB.
The exhaust valve rocker arm, main bearing caps, governor weight & latch out appear similar to Bates & Edmonds Bull Dogs also.
Do I have the only one in existence?

I heard from Fred Prichard, recently moved from New Hampshire to Tennessee, who found that the July/August, 1978 GEM page 22 has a What Is It??? item on my compressor/engine.

http://www.gasenginemagazine.com/complete-archive/1117

I understand that George S. Clark has passed away some time ago. Anyone in Connecticut remember seeing this engine?

My engine has been repainted but saw no signs of a decal or any numbers or letters on the cylinder head as mentioned. Unfortunately the photo does not show the mixer. Appears to be the same muffler but mine is mounted with a nipple & street el so points the other way. I have it running decentlly but compressor seems to make as much or more noise than the engine!
I'm looking for a small receiver & suitable unloader(comp. discharge is 1/2" pipe).

Default Re: Unidentified engine list

Here are two photos of my still unidentified engine/compressor unit. One of photos here was taken at 2008 Canandaigua Pageant of Steam show where feature engine was "Oddballs & Misfits". Engine is hit & miss but does not coast much as it pumps air at every revoltion. I received no credible guesses at the show or in previous thread with more photos:
Someone did identify the compressor as a Curtis. Suppose Curtis contracted with an engine manufacturer?
