Default Need help starting a Maytag

I just bought a 92 Maytag engine at a sale and it looks good but won't fire. I need some help finding someone in the North Carolina Raleigh area that will help in starting it. Thanks, Henry

Note: I have another on a ice cream machine that runs perfectly.

First order of business is to see if it has spark. Hold the end of the ignition wire about 3/16" away from the block, and have a friend kick the engine over. No spark?, then you will have to get under the flywheel to check out the points and condenser. Spark?, attach the plug and retry. If the plug has wet carbon, or is soaked with gas, don't bother going further. Clean the plug, and dry thoroughly with a torch, and let cool, before installing. In the meantime, ground out the ignition wire, close the fuel needle, and kick the engine over until you no longer see fuel vapor being ejected from the spark plug hole. (If you are in a hurry, and feel adventureous, hold the end of the ignition wire about 1/8" from the inside edge of the spark plug threads, and have a buddy kick over the engine. DO NOT PUT HANDS OR BODY IN FRONT OF THE PLUG OPENING If you do, when the fuel air charge lights, so will the offending body part . If the plug is dry, remove carb from engine, and clean out the fuel pick up, make sure the check valve is free, as well as the inlet poppet, and be sure to have fresh gas at 16:1 gas to oil ratio(1 cup oil SAE 30 NON Detergent oil to 1 gallon gas). The fuel needle should be closed with the pointer to the right, looking at engine from the carb end. Needle should be opened enough to flood engine after a few kicks, when opened all the way to the left. Engine should run best with the needle in the vicinity of the straight up position. Champion A-25 , #34, or the original Maytag plug should work, I have used the Champion 'X' as well, but it tends to foul after a while, if you do not load the engine.

When cleaning the points and checking the condenser, make sure there is no rusty crud to jump the gap from the magnets to the coil pickups. Bill O.

Henry
If you need, I can probably get you in touch with a couple guys in the Raleigh/Apex area that have experience with Maytags. I don't myself, but have a few friends that have a few Maytags and do. Send me a message & I'll try to get you all together.
