There is a locomotive that was buried in a tunnel collapse in Richmond back in 1925. The railroad sealed the tunnel and the train remains there today. Recently a group has proposed a plan to recover the locomotive and they began doing feasibility studies on the land. They drilled some holes into the tunnel and started pumping out water so they could lower in cameras and try to see what's down there. Last I heard, the city halted the project because of permits and concerns that pumping out the water could cause another collapse. There are homes built over portions of the tunnel. Here's some info:

interesting story. hopefully they can get it dug out was wondering what would make the boiler explode though you would think just pipes and stuff would break off causing burns. But if the fireman got out to tell the tale it must be true, but then again how could he survive a boiler explosion if he was right there firing it

My understanding was that it wasn't a boiler explosion per say; the tunnel caving in broke a steam pipe. The engineer was pinned between the throttle and the boiler when the cab was crushed and could not get away from the scalding steam; eventually, a hole was dug straight down from the surface to recover his body.

There is a picture of the "Steam Dinosaur" on the webpage at:

A color version of this picture is on my Surviving World Steam Vehicle CD-ROM; although it looks like the record needs to be moved to my Surviving World Steam Locomotive CD-ROM.

The other Aveling & Porter engine at Cwt-y-Bugail quarry has since been removed. It is hard to believe that much can be salvaged from it to restore the other; and I assume the remainder would be destroyed in the process. It just doesn't seem quite right.

Anywhere the rest of us non-subscribers to Old Glory can read about the 2nd engine that was salvaged? I'd love to see the "rest of the story" myself!

I know on old gas tractors, etc. often times it takes "two to make one", as I've always heard it called. Shame parts from two couldn't be duplicated to make two, with something this rare and old.
