Default cutting south bend belt and regluing?

we're taking apart our south bend lathe to get it in the basement and the belt needs to be cut. can it be reglued back together? or does a new one need to be put on after? and what kind of glue should be used? any other comments/suggetions would be great.

It can be glued, laced or use wire belt hooks. If glued, use a waterproof belt cement. If you give me your e mail address, I'll scan a couple of pages on belt spliceing from South Bends book How To Run A Lathe

I was unable to see the pictures of your South Bend lathe. They would not open. I work in Tooling Rework and we have a SB with the flat belt. We also have the wire hooks and pins. I just re-spliced it last week. I'll try to take a look at the box and get the information for you.

I was in the Air Force in Sacramento California in the mid to late 60's and I uncrated a SB lathe with the flat belt that was packed in cosmoline in the early 50's.

I work with a s.b.16'' @work &a9''at home several years ago I installed a seat belt from a pickup on the 16''I overlapped about 6''&glued it w/shoegoo if in doing it over I would also stitch the belt &maybe make the belt 2 layers although it has worked ok. Takes a lot of lite amounts of belt dressing at first

The best belt ive use was made from a used car belt. I cut to size stiched together and glued the stiches with super glue. I saw this on a web page go to www.practicalmachinist.com click on the south bend fourm. If you want to know anything about south bend theirs a girl , named Paula and she is sharp. She has helped me out more than once. Once you get on this form do a search on belts . I dont have to listen to the tick, tick, tick, of the old leather belt
