Hi Ed,

Visit your local diesel fuel injection shop and ask if they have any left over o-rings from pump rebuild kits. These are high quality o-rings and if they are like our shop they will have many leftovers in many sizes. At our shop we have at times had so many that we bagged them up and gave them away or threw them out. Even now if a customer comes in and wants to match up an o-ring to one he has we just give him a box full and let him go through and pick out what he needs at no charge.

I buy o-rings from several sources but find McMaster Carr has a pretty good selection of sizes and materials. Not the cheapest place around but the service is good. Aircraft Spruce is OK but also kinda expensive. The free box at the diesel shop sounds GREAT for a model maker!!

Many materials are used, each with unique properties such as what fluids you are dealing with, temperature etc. The number of sizes is nearly endless as well. I derive most of my information from parts books for aircraft as that is where I use most of the things.

Hey Ed, if you're using it for the piston ring I'd use a Quad ring. It's a square ring made for linear movement & won't have a tendancy to roll like round O-ring would. I use them in my models & (run the heck out of them) & they've held up fine to heat & everything. I'll see if I can find the supplier name.

I believe Caterpillar are a good supplier of Quad rings. They have a book that show all the sizes and gives you the Caterpillar number.

I found them at McMaster Carr. I use it for a piston ring with good results. Tom
