Default Voltage output from Kohler 17hp stator coil?

Recently purchased a used Kohler Courage 17hp with elect starter.
It was installed on a Snapper Mower but the VReg was not working (no output).

I checked the stator output and found it to be 48vac and know that the battery may draw 10amps.

Does anybody know if 48v output is normal for this engine?
What is the voltage ouput of the stator coil for other 12-20hp IC engines?

I have a VReg from another engine but it regulates too high for that input....26vdc with 48vac input. Any suggestions how to make this work.

The voltage output is correct. You need to use the correct three terminal Kohler rectifier/ voltage regulator with this stator. The Koler regulator has three terminals with the regulator metal case as the fourth. The AC from the stator is connected to the two outside 1/4 inch blade terminals. The DC plus charging current comes from the center terminal and the case of the regulator is the negative side. Remember you need a fuse of about 20 amps in the positive lead of the regulator to protect it and the stator from acccidental reverse conection of the battery.

I forgot to add that with the newer Kohler engine with a plastic shroud, you need to run a jumper wire from the case of the regulator to the engine block or good ground on the equipment to which the engine is mounted.

Thanks Kent.
The mount is directly to the engine, so it is grounded well, as checked by ohm to battery neg. cable.

I connected a volt. Reg. to it from another Kohler but the output is 26v with the 48 in. So I used a 1:2 transformer I had from a Euro conversion from Radio Shack to get the volt down to 13.5v. This should provide the potential to drive a current to charge the battery at 12v.
The rating is not that much though so you make a good suggestion to fuse protect the weak links.
As long as the battery does not go down too much, the power (amp) draw will not fry the small transformer I am using.
Few extra wires, but it ought to do until i can find the right VR.

Thanks for letting me know.
Any idea where to get componets to make a VR for 48 to 14vdc with 200w power?

There has to be something wrong with the regulator you are using and you need to replace it. The regulators are designed with an output to safely charge a 12 volt battery. The Kohler regulator for a 15 amp system is P/N 25 755 03 or 25 755 03-S or 41 403 01 or 41 403 04 or 41 403 05 or 41 403 09-S. The one you will need depends on you engines model and spec number.
