Default Holes in Associated base

Hey guys. I just noticed something for the first time today. On my associated 2-1/4 Hired Man engine, there are two threaded holes in the engine base about 3/8" in diameter (rough guess). These are on the governor side directly underneath the crankshaft with a special raised area in the casting of the base for something to mount there. What in the world would have gone here? I never noticed it before. Would it have been something like a butter churn like on the Famous engines? Thanks.

Jeb

The holes are for mounting a factory option "reducing gear". It fits the 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 HP engines with a small 4" pulley that is positioned behind the end of the base. The pulley speed is about 1/3 of the engine speed and is designed for cream separators and butter churns. I have some pix of one on a 2 HP engine but I believe it's to large to include here. Send me your address and I'll be happy to send it your way.
