Has anyone built on of these V8 engines? How complicated is the valve train on a flat head? Does anyone know where to buy a small cam grinder? I've seen two sets of castings on the net one has over head valves and one can be done as a flat head any preferences? Any help is appreciated.

John,
Go to the following site to see some pictures of model multi-cylinder engines: < http://www.baemclub.com/ > You might be able to get in touch with some of club members to obtain information on how they approched similiar problems you are encounting. Many of their engines were displayed at the "Men, Metal & Machines" model show held in Visalia, California several years ago. Some of the running model V8s sound like their big brothers. |

John, I didn't see a picture with your question so I don't know which engine you are talking about. I have built one V-8 and one 4 cylinder of my own design. The valve train in a flathead is a little simpler than an overhead engine because it doesn't have pushrods or rocker arms. It also doesn't have a rocker cover to go over them. The rest would be pretty much the same, rods, pistons, oil pump, water pump etc. As far as a cam grinder goes, you'd have to build one of your own. Most of the fellows that have one built theirs. I machined mine in a rotary table and stepped it of with my milling machine. There are several way to build cams for model use. If you've never built an internal combustion engine I would say that jumping into a V-8 is a little bit to much to start with but I don't know your skill level. Here's a couple of pictures of mine.
