Default Dyke's Automobile & Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia

Does anyone out there have a copy of one of Dyke's Automobile & Gasoline Engine Encyclopedias, preferably one from the 20's or 30's???
I'm thinking about buying a few, but I'm getting conflicting advice about just what they include from sellers; some posts refer to their having the kind of data I'm looking for, but two sellers have said no, which might've been a misunderstanding of my inquiry, or the seller just not being familiar with them and not knowing what to look for or where to look.
If anyone has one, I'd deeply appreciate your emailing (pitybud@msn.com) so I can find out, for sure, whether it'd be money well spent or money wasted.. Many thxx for any help with this!

Hi,
I have a copy from around that time period around here somewhere.
What sort of information are you hoping to find in it??

I think I know where my copy is, and tomorrow when I'm at the shop I'll try to dig it up.

Rick

Try a Google book search, it should find at least one from the time period of your interest. Look it over and answer your question.

Rick andNam: many thxx for replies.
Nam: I can find lots of listings, but I've not found a pic of a page actually showing my info; most likely I've missed some somewhere.
Rick: my interest is the US independent gasoline engine makers(Beaver/LeRoi, Buda, Chief, Cont, etc etc) and finding which specific truck/tractor etc their individual engines went into, so I pick up stuff like parts catalogs, or my 50 Motor Trk/Trctr manual, that list several years trucks etc (anything besides cars or mainline trucks etc that use "own" engines) that have listings like:
Old Hickory Mod M,3/4T 1921 Lyc KB;
Plowman 15-30A 1920-23 Buda YTU
Baldwin Hvstor/Combine 1929 Cont W9
Adams Grader 312 46-53 IHC UD9
Such listings show the specific truck etc make, model and years, and which specific engine(s) were installed or available in the "production" run, altho individual buyers sometimes wanted a different engine.
I understand the 20s/30s Dyke's cover several years, and my question was whether they showed the above make/model/year for trucks WITH the specific engine ID (farm, const, ind'l stuff often doesn't show any years, but you take what you can find).
Hope this is more or less understandable; many thxx for your help. Bud

Bud,
Go to this Google site and type in "Dyke's Automobile & Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia". You will get a summary of the Encyclopedia.

I have picked up 4 different Dykes encyclopia's on Ebay for around the $20.00 mark each , not sure which issue has your info in them, but for the money they are a wealth of information, and I think well worth having in the library, I try and pickup different ones when the become available so long as they aren't destroyed and all ripped up. Well worth the investment in my eyes no matter what one is looking for.

I dug up my Dyke's book this evening in the "warehouse". It is the eighteenth edition copyright 1939. In the truck section it has data tables on 1937 model trucks. Mfg's include autocar, available, biederman, brockway, clydesdale, etc. It has a line for each of the the models produced by each manufacturer, and on that line it gives the the following spec's: tonnage rating, chassis price, statndard wheelbase, max wheelbase furnished, gvw, tire sizes, make and model of engine,no of cyl's, bore and stroke, displacement, comp ratio, trans info, rear axle info, brake, and frame info. The book also has tractor, motorcyle, and outboard info. There's over 1200 pages of alot of great info. Even though the book seems to be centered around 1937, there are sections on the model t car and truck, as well as the model A, plus many many others.
This is a valuable book to have on the shelf, especially for referencing the "oddball" stuff.

Hope this helps,
Rick

Rick and all: Many thxx for positive comments...
Rick: special thanks for your taking the time to dig out your copy and send info; they're just what I like.
To all: my apologies if we wind up bidding against each other (although my budget is quite limited)! Bud

Bud; Old gasket catalogs have a lot of the info you are looking for also. They usually tell B & S of the engine, model ect. If you see one, don't pass it up. I have a 1928 and a 1951 Victor that I refer to now and then.

I have 4 Dyke's . A 12th ed. printed 1920, 13th ed. printed 1923, a 20th ed, printed 1945 and a 22nd ed. printed in 1949 which has over 1300 pages. When buying one, look for a edition that comes closst to the year info you want.
