Yes, the F226 was a popular little engine, apparently used mostly in farm stuff; a number of posts have referred to it in various pieces of farm eqpmt..
My 50 Motor Trk/Trctr Man shows it as an L-hd 6, 35/16 x 43/8, comp 6.00, Tqe 168@1000, BHP 72@3000 in the "automotive" (truck) version, but doesn't give any comp, tqe or BHP for the F226 version in the M-H 44-6 1947-48, the 101Sr 1942-45, or the 102G Sr 1942-45. Your local library should have copies of the Motor manual for the specs (sorry; no scanner)
Remember Continental used, at least for awhile, three different numbers for the same (basically) engine depending on use:for this engine it seems to be F6226 for the "automotive" (truck) version, F226 for "industrial" (which includes farm tractors and eqpmt), and (if the then system holds true), probably PF226 for the "power unit" version. But can't help at all on the date of your rig. Good luck.

The Continental Red Seal F226 was used by Kaiser in their cars...when Kaiser bought Willys-Overland that engine ended up in a lot of Jeep trucks and Utility Wagons...it was marketed as the "Willys SuperHurricane" and replaced the smaller "Lightning" 6 that was used prior to 1954. I've had a fair amount of experience with them and consider them to be just as good as the Chrysler flathead sixes...particularly in 4wd applications. (where low rpm and smooth, high torque rule the trail---give me a flathead six in that rock crawling jeep anyday...and I'll embarrass a lot of 350 chevy owners!)

My dad had a 1963 Checker that he bought new (not a taxi cab) that had a Continental 226 cu.in. engine in it. Not a real powerhouse, but it ran forever.

The F-226 was a very popular engine. It was replaced by the F-227. different block head and crank. Now what you need to watch the automotive engines such as in a Jeep run a timing chain. The industrial engines run timing gears. So cams are different because of opposite rotation. I think a man in Toledo can help you out on dating those engines. He also has a ton of parts. John

That engine was also a very popular marine engine conversion. The old Graymarine's were actually Continentals (I have a Graymarine '109' in a boat of mine that I think is the '226').

I'm also working on a Toro General. The serial number on my tractor was on the right side of the frame on the top just ahead of the dash panel. Mine in a 1964 Model # 37012, with a dump box and 6 cyl. Continental F226 Spec: 1578, SN: 122245. I'm checking at work to see if we still have any manuals for it, and will get back to you if I find out.

My brother had a 1963 Rambler with a flat head six in it. Kinda funny looking engine as I recall with the distributor coming out of the head. I have seen a lot of 4 cyclinder engines with the distributor coming out of the head on fork lifts.
