Default Engines made in Virginia

as a native and proud virginian, and avid engine nut?

i was wondering today if there was ever an engine built in virginia?

with over 2000 known engines, you would think at least one engine company could have been produced in most of our great states.

what about your home state?

Mike,
Being born and raised in PA, I know there were many engine companys there. I know of one from NC. They made the Jack Rabbit.

The Navy made 2 stroke marine engines in Norfolk, VA. Here are some pics I took at the Clavert, MD Marine Engine Show a couple of years ago. There are also pics in one of Stan Graysons Books. I think one of the "Engines Afloat" volumes
By the way the Calvert,MD Antique Marine Engine Show is this coming weekend. May 5 and 6, 2007

Emerson Engine Co., Goodwin & Co, Coffee & Sons, Enterprise Machine Wks, Richmond Gasoline Engine Co. Smith-Courtney & Co., Smydor Pump & Well Co, Spotless Co. Some, none or all of the above may have built engines in Va.

Several of the listed companies were just jobbers:
Smith-Courtney sold the Meco engine, built by Witte
Smydor Pump & Well sold Otto, Domestic and a few other brands, they are still in the well & water supply business.
Spotless sold the Bullseye built by Jacobson and a few other brands.

I don't have any info on the other companies, although I do have a nametag from the Richmond Gasolene Engine Co., my brother found it many years ago while looking for Civil War relics. It's not stamped with any serial no. or hp.
but it does have a bullet hole through it !

Tanner and Delaney Engine Co., made steam engines in Richmond, VA. There is one known surviving portable engine that is shown at the Shenandoah Valley Steam and Gas show in Berryville, VA. There is a picture of it in this thread:

http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showth...074#post163074

If you notice their sign, it says "The only Tanner and Delaney steam engine IN THE WORLD..."

Well.... I know where there's another engine that I'm trying to get donated to a local show... so Berryville might have to modify their sign a little...
