This Maybe The Same As Previous Post. It Was Taken At Penns Cave Show A Couple Years Ago.dick. AFTER LOOKING OVER IT MIGHT BE SAME BRAND OF COMPRESSOR BUT DIFFERENT CONVERSION. DICK.

I'm imtrigued with these engines made from Compressors. I was involved in the refrigeration trade back in the 60's and many of the belt driven compressors, Tecumseh, Brunner etc had eccentrics on the cranks rather than actual throw crankshafts. seems to me those wouldnt work very well trying to make an engine. Or are Air compressors equipped with cranks??
Just curious VicP

Are You are talking about the new style compressors. The older ones are an ideal unit to the make a h-t miss engine from. They have the crank, rod & pistion just like an engine. I have an eye on 2 very small compressors to make an engine out of. Sure hope I can get them. Jim Last edited by Jim Tremble; 05-01-2007 at 01:09 AM. |

Here is a engine that my Dad made from a compressor a few years back. I believe he used a distributer shaft with 90 degree worm gears out of a voltswagon engine for the side shaft that the flyweights are attached to. He can tell you more about it then I can. Photo is not real good quality need to take some better ones.

I won't be converting it, but one restored compressor I have that would make a neat conversion is a small inline 4 cylinder craftsman compressor from maybe the 30's to 50's. The whole "block" is about 8" long and weighs about 5 pounds, it has a regular 4 throw crankshaft in it. - A neat little thing.

Ned,
How about posting a picture(s) of it? Probably a lot of us would like to see what it's like. I've never seen one like it myself. Bill |

I have 3 of the engines made from older engines and Air compressors. I don't have any way to post pictures. An earlier post mentioned the gears from V W's. That is what the fellow that made mine used also, works great and is not to large of a gear. One one of mine he used the gears from an earlier B&S engine to operate the Ex. Valve. The other one is a side shaft. On the Compressors you have to make a spacer between the block and the head to create the combustion chamber. On compressors the piston comes too close to the head and there is no place for the combustion chamber. Each one is Unique and fun to play with. They also get a lot of attention at Shows.

As A Matter Of Fact I Just Picked Up A Vertical Running Maytag That Was Converted To A Compressor Over The Weekend At Auction. It Has A Small Air Tank With A Gauge And Water Seporator. The Funny Thing Is It Has 2 Elecric Motors Belted Together To Turn The Maytag Over Because The Compression Is So Strong. I Ran It The Other Day When I Got Home And It Worked, It Doesent Pump Up Very High But It Does Work. I Will Take A Pic And Post It.

Thank you for the pictures and advice...I just picked up an old compressor and have no need for it as a compressor, so I just wanted to get some ideas.
Thanks Mac Leod <also if there are any more pictures, please post them> |

A few posts up there was talk of a 4 cylinder inline compressor. I have 2 of these. One on a complete running set up and the other purchased separately last year at Portland ($5 - no flywheel)
Here are a couple of pics of the complete one that I cleaned & painted. Has a Lauson RSC engine to drive it and a Campbell - Hausfelt (SP??) tag on the base. |

I have an engine I made from a Curtiss compressor. I also used the VW gears and made a side shaft for it. I don't have a picture on this computer, but you can see it in the April 2004 issue of GEM to see it.

John, Yes, your compressor is exactly the same as my little 4 cyl Craftsman. Even the same base & storage tank. I just put a 'vintage' electric motor on mine.

Jim French is working on a nice open-crank "four poster" vertical H&M built from an old vacuume pump. Have a look...

Here's one I made up a long time ago. It's not open crank but still kinda neat. It was a 2-cylinder refrigeration compressor a guy gave me at a show & had the eccentrics instead of the normal crankshaft. I had to make a new crankshaft & rods for it. The mag flywheel was off an old lawnmower engine with the fins turned off. Not sure what the other flywheel was off of. I was gonna use it in a go-kart but never got that far.

Nice compressors uh engines!
I am planning to make a model engine too, and looking for sideshaft gears.. What sort of Volkswagen has that sort of gears? Are that the gears for driving the ignition? Coen |
