I don't recall the selling price on the Bremen Stirling but here are a few of the other engines and tractors. Steve Barr was at the auction so I am sure he will have a complete list out shortly.
The Star went for $30,000.00. The McVicker went for $5,000.00. The Otto went for $16,000.00. The 4 1/2 Quincy went for $13,500.00. The 6 HP Geiser went for $20,000.00. The 2 HP Quincy hopper cooled went for $15,000.00. The 1/2 HP New Holland went for $13,000.00. The 40-80 Minneapolis went for $77,000.00. The 10-20 Titan went for $16,000.00. Both tractors plus three others went to a phone bidder in Belgium. A small IHC vertical air-cooled went for $6500.00. |

I made the trip out there from MA with a friend and fellow collector from NH. It was like a 12 hour drive since we encountered some traffic on the way down, but it was really cool to go to a large gas engine auction (it was the first one I had been to that was mostly all engines) I took down a good amount of prices for most of the engine. There weren’t too many "all original engines" very few had original paint, a good amount were complete, a few were what I would call "museum quality" Some one reasonably, some when really high; it was all a matter of who wanted what. I came home with a nice all original Elgin Haf-a-Horse (Liberty decal) missing the coil, other wise complete with good compression. Here are some of the prices I recorded. (Some of the high lights not already mentioned)
Unknown Side shaft (nice small engine) $ 3500 Brownwall $ 900 IHC Jr. $ 1,700 Gray model N (Sn 2222) $ 550 IHC Famous Jr. $ 2400 small Associated engine (missing mag) $ 550 Domestic Engine (needed a good amount of work) $ 900 Early Stover vertical (incomplete some good parts) $ 400 IHC famous 1 Hp? (With butter churn gear) $ 1,350 2hp Jacobson 2hp Jack pumper (a real neat engine, I though) $ 1250 Associated Busy Boy (Sn 20440) $ 1,350 Vertical Maytag (original paint, welded fin on top of the cylinder, loose bearings looked very early) $ 775 1hp Stove Leg Maytag (Aluminum base, newly broken fin on head, nice compression) $ 1,400 Briggs Model F Sn 608 (early model battery and coil engine, missing tag and oilier, good carb, rocker, and base, 1 chipped fin on head which looked like an old break. The original pulley had a gear welded to it and the piston was stuck tight) $ 1,600 12 hp FBM N (major project engine) $ 2800 16 Hp Jacobson $ 8,000 large Jacobson $ 17,000 Schram Domestic (air compressor engine) a steal at $ 1,000 2 hp New Holland $ 5,750 1 ˝ Olds $ 3,200 ( nice shape all original paint) Small Schmidt Bros engine (missing fan on large block of concrete) $ 800 small Foos $ 1,000 ( another steal) Domestic $ 3,700 Gade $ 1,900 2 FBM Eclipse engines on a cart $ 1,700 3hp FBM Generator (complete minus batteries) $ 400 I almost bought it FBM small model T $ 2,100 Fairbanks Co Bull pup $ 2,100 Mietz & Weiss 8,000 15 Hp FBM Z ( greasy with side water pump) $ 1,400 Pretty much complete larger F&J pump jack engine with the pump (stuck) $ 450. FBM 2hp Empire Special $ 550 (complete uncommon engine) .Some of the best deals were at the end of the auction on the manual trailer; I came home with a large stack of paper. Over all I thought it was a nice auction; I took a lot of pictures. The only engine I missed a chance to bid on was the Air compressor FBM that was in the building with the larger engines. I hope to go to a large sale like this again in the future. ~ Jonathan |

Did anyone record any selling prices from the North, VA auction last Saturday?
Too many things conspired to keep me from going. |

Steve Barr was there so you only have to be patient and pictures and prices will magically appear here in a day or two.

The load photos are sad to me. Look at the number of engines on each of those loads..... I was at the auction as well and noticed that the majority of engines were bought by just a few...and I know that most of them were going to resell the engines. I saw a number of people who bid on just one or two engines (mainly the lower cost ones) lose them to these people. I mean, the auctioneer, from Iowa(?) was calling people out by name and recognizing others-in an auction in Virginia. I expected collectors from other states, but had no idea of the number of resellers that must exist out in engineland. I realize that high bidder wins, but I for one will probably never go to such an auction again. I heard comments from the dealers buying like "make good ebay material" and "can't wait to part this one out". On the other hand, several engines there were just fit to part out, with cylinders completely gone because of frost damage (I mean like 80% or better was not there), but I heard the comments about engines that were missing just a few things as well. I reckon I'll look for the auctions with one or two or five engine that won't attract but those interested in owning and not reselling. I realize there are those among you that have a lot of money and own many, many engines, but there are a bunch of us that have just a few 1 or 2 or even 5 or 6, but are limited in $$ and look for bargains....and they are out there, but not at this auction. However, maybe I'm just jealous and wish I had the $$ like the people that paid $13000 for the New Holland - I would like to think not, but there are people out there reading this that probably think so. I hope if I ever do get that much disposable income, I will be considerate of others and only buy those engines that I like and will enjoy watching run, not buying to resell. I guess I never realized the number of people that make it there business to buy and resell engines. I have sold engines, don't get me wrong, but I sold them to buy another engine I wanted more, and could only afford if I sold something. I apologize for the long discourse, but it has been bothering me since I left the auction...perhaps upon further reflection I'll change my mind, but I doubt it.

Well TomT there were many engines that sold very reasonable and some sold high and some went fair. Maybe what you wanted sold higher than you thought it was worth, but I know many of the engines there would sell in less than an hour if posted on enginads for the same price they went for at the auction. If you are looking engines at less than 50% of market value then there was your chance because that's what some of those went for. Maybe you wanted to give more like 25% of the value? That can happen at a public auction but not very often.. Sorry but that's the way I see it...

I knew my posting would provoke strong emotions on both sides of the fence. You are correct, some sold high, some sold cheap (most for a reason), and some were fair. It was just obvious that there was a group of individuals that were there to buy the most engines they could. That's the group I guess I was speaking to. I reckon I am speaking from the non-business side of things. I never realized how much a "business" the buying and selling of engines has become and this was the eye opener. As I said, there was no enjoyment here for me as at most auctions. I realized there were a few individuals that got the engine they set out to buy, but perhaps I was more focused on watching the 7 or 8 individuals that were buying engine after engine. I do not hold any animosity towards anyone, but normally I enjoy going to auctions as you see people excited over what they buy, talking animatedly about the items, and so on. This was not readily apparent here....instead, I saw more discussion on the business side of things, rather than the enjoyment. Perhaps the enjoyment was in getting the bragging rights for buying the most and I missed it. Nevertheless, I hope everyone that bought something enjoys the fruits of their labors. I was not successful bidding on the engines I would have liked, but the prices they got were fair, just on the upper side of fair price, and slightly past my price range, some by only $100 but some by $3-400, but I am not upset. I have lived this long without the engines I bid on, and hopefully will live a while longer. More opportunities will come along, and I will endeavor to persevere. I am not trying to denigrate the "business" buyers by any measure, simply making an observation about it. Like I said, it was a real eye opener for me.

Bottom line if you knew these people were buying engines and going to be reselling them all you have to is go one bid higher and chances are you will still be able to sell it and make some money. Everyone on this site at one time or another has bought something for a good deal to turn around and resell it for a profit. I only have common engines as well. But I would find a way if i seen a rare engine go for a good deal even if I couldn't afford it cause it is 10 times easier to sell a $5000 rare engine than it is to sell a common engine like a fairbanks Z or a IHC M and the rare engine there is no playing around. People pull there wallet out and spend the money for the best. personally some prices sound pretty high but there were some that went for a good deal that you could have bought and resold on here made a $1000 and than go out and buy another engine basically for free. I have never been to one of these big auctions down there but one day I will, just don't get mad at me if I bring a few of them home. Thanks everyone that posts prices at these auctions. I always love seeing what the engine market is bringing.

The way I would see it is if the dealers were buying all the engines they must have been good deals! The dealers are business men and would only buy them if they could re sell them at a higher price, So I would have to assume that what they bought they were bought pretty much at wholesale price, They certenly would not be able to pay full retail prices, travel hundreds of miles, pay high gas prices, hotel charges and so on and continue in there business. I know it kind of sucks to loose an engine to another when you know all that they are doing is re selling it and this is one that you really wanted, I am willing to bet that most of us have been on both sides of that coin. And don't forget that an auction is there to get the seller the best possibal price NOT get you the best possibal deal!

I know what your saying TomT. I think the engine hobby is turning into a major money pit. The only reason alot of people do it is for the value of the engines, not the enjoyment of what they are. Just like alot of collector cars, people buy them and say ''look what I got'' put them in a shed and there they sit, never driven just because its worth alot of money to someone. Thats what's happening to this hobby.
