Default magneto Magnets (Webster)

When using a compass to determine north and south on a magnet for charging , is the needle pointing to the north or south of the magnet ? This question sounds simple ( But is it, assuming true north is really south ).

When placing a Webster's magnet back on does it matter which magnetic pole goes on which side?

Thanks to all replies Edward N Jablonski

Doesn't matter, as long as you put North to South and South to North. Using the compass, find out which end of your charger is the North pole. Put the South pole of the magneto on this side.

You should charge the magnet while it is mounted ON the magneto! If you find that it is hard to get it into position on the charger, use soft iron bars to direct the magnetic flow into the magneto magnet. The armature should remain inside the magneto while charging and thereafter.

An easy way to get the right polarity is to tie a sturdy cord to the center of the magnet, suspend the magnet over the charger about 18 inches. Turn the charger on and lower the magnet slowly. Itwill rotate to the right poles.

The question that hasn't been answered is , What if the magnet was removed from the Webster magneto and it wasn't marked . Does it matter which pole goes on which side ? If it does what goes where ?

Thanks Ed

: -- Harry if you have already removed the magnet, re install it and charge as above. When you remove a magnet from its mount, in can lose up to 60% of its magnetic force in as little as 60 seconds. In the case of the block type magnets on the American Bosch AB 33 and 34 mags, they can be destroyed instantly if they are removed from their mounts If you must remove horse shoe magnets, slide a keeper along the sides of the magnet, as you slip it off the base, shorting the magnetic feild, until the keeper is across the poles. this will keep the magnetic feild from decaying until the magnet is reinstalled As you reinstall the magnet, slip the keepers again up the sides until the magnet is seated and then remove the keepers. if you or any one need further assistance, drop me a note.

No, Ed, you're not charging a battery, just making a spark. The polarity doesn't matter. If you have two magnets, they need to go on the same way, of course!
